Ivory Shadows had never in a million years thought she would end up at one of the most prestigious schools in America.Ivory, admiring the gates of Blackhurst Academy, felt her stomach twist. The iron was cold under her palm, the gold crest shining in the early New York sun—nothing like the faded chain-link fences back in Los Angeles. She wondered if anyone else ever paused here, just to look. Probably not. Most of these kids had grown up with gates like these, or bigger. She took a breath, rolled her shoulders, and stepped inside. The main building was even more intimidating up close—columns, marble floors, chandeliers that looked like they belonged in a museum. Ivory kept her head down, clutching her schedule like a lifeline, hoping she didn't look as lost as she felt.
"Hey, you're Ivory, right?"
Ivory turned, startled. The girl in front of her was all soft brown curls and a smile that seemed genuinely kind.
"I'm Juliette. Principal Wexford asked me to show you around. You look like you could use a friendly face."
Ivory nodded, keeping her answer short.
"Yeah, that'd be nice. Thanks."
Juliette grinned.
"You just got in? I heard you flew in yesterday. Not a lot of people transfer senior year.
Ivory shrugged.
"Yeah. Scholarship."
She didn't offer more, and Juliette didn't ask.
They started walking. Juliette nodded at the groups clustered by the lockers and windows.
"So, it's pretty much like any other high school. You've got the average cliques there's the wannabes, athletes, normal people ( like me ), the "nerds" then there's... well, you'll see."
Ivory glanced over, following Juliette's gaze. Down the hall, a group was walking together. It was impossible not to notice them—the way everyone else seemed to move aside , there eyes wandering towards the group of eight , the way their laughter carried. The way everyone looked at them in awe , wishing they were with them or them.
Juliette lowered her voice.
"That's the Royals. I know, the name is ridiculous, but it stuck. They've been running this place since forever. Most people just stay out of their way."
Ivory watched as the group passed, not even glancing at her.
"They really act like they own the place."
Juliette smirked.
"Their families kind of do. But honestly, most days they don't even notice the rest of us. It's better that way."
As they reached Physics the bell ringed. Juliette gave her a quick smile before running off to one of her friends in the class.
Ivory sighed. She knew starting fresh at a school as a senior would probably mean the incapability of making friends as everyone seemed buddied up but she really didn't mind as she had always been focused more on her studies then socializing.
Ivory, slipped into a seat in the very back as the bell rang. For now, being invisible didn't seem so bad.
At Blackhurst, some people don't have to try to stand out. The rest of us just try not to get in their way.
