Song Recommendation: Flicker – Niall Horan

The Rain Hasn’t Stopped
Their cloaks are heavy. Mud coats their boots and the hem of Sunghoon’s trousers, but he doesn’t care. He doesn’t even notice the rain anymore.
He only sees Jake.
Their hands are still clasped—tight, like if they let go, the other might vanish. Jake’s breathing is shaky. Sunghoon watches the way his chest rises and falls, the way his lips part like he wants to say something but can’t find the words.
So Sunghoon speaks instead.
“Come back with me.”
Jake’s eyes widen, fear flickering across his face.
“To what?” he asks softly. “To watch you marry someone else?”
“There is no one else,” Sunghoon says quickly, the words tumbling from his lips like a confession. “I can’t do it. I won’t. I don’t want to marry her—I don’t want to marry anyone but you.”
Jake stares at him. “But your father. The kingdom—”
Sunghoon exhales shakily. “Let them burn it all down.”
He means it. He feels it. In this moment, the weight of the world feels so much smaller than the hand he’s holding.
But Jake still doesn’t speak. His lips press into a line. His gaze drops to the ground.
“You don’t believe me,” Sunghoon says, and the crack in his voice is deeper than any thunder rolling above them.
Jake closes his eyes. “I want to. But I’ve spent so long being the thing you couldn’t have. I started to believe I wasn’t supposed to be yours.”
“You were,” Sunghoon says, stepping closer until their chests nearly touch. “You are.”
He raises Jake’s hand, kisses the back of it. “I know I should have said something earlier. I should’ve fought harder. But I’m here now. I left everything, Jake.”
Jake opens his eyes.
And this time, he doesn’t look away.

Later That Night
They found shelter in an abandoned stone hut on the edge of the woods. The roof leaks, the walls are cracked, but it’s enough.
Sunghoon lights what little dry kindling he can find. Jake watches him, quiet.
Their clothes are laid out to dry, their cloaks hung on hooks by the door. Both of them sit in their underlayers, damp and shivering, but no longer cold.
The fire crackles.
Jake leans back against the stone wall, knees drawn up, and Sunghoon settles beside him.
There’s a silence between them—comfortable this time. Honest.
Jake finally speaks. “Do you think your father will let you come back?”
Sunghoon hesitates, then shakes his head. “No.”
Jake turns his head, surprised. “You’re sure?”
“I disgraced the crown. I ran from an arranged marriage. I abandoned my title for a stable boy.”
Jake flinches.
Sunghoon notices. He reaches out, gently touching Jake’s jaw. “I’m not ashamed of you.”
Jake’s throat bobs. “Even if it means losing everything?”
Sunghoon nods. “I already lost everything when I lost you.”
Jake’s eyes glisten in the firelight.
And slowly, he leans in.
Their lips meet in a kiss that tastes like every promise they were too afraid to speak before. It’s hesitant, then desperate, then slow again—like they’ve finally found home in each other.

At the Palace
The guards whisper. The council panics. The king is furious.
“Find him!” he roars. “Bring my son back!”
But Sunghoon is no longer a prince.
He is something far more dangerous.
He is in love.
