- IV

Neteyam sat with his father by the door of their marui. Neteyam didn't have a tulkun, he never really wanted one or needed one at all, but it would be nice to talk to a friend about everything. He excused himself from his mother and father and dove with his ilu underwater. He saw everyone talking to their spirit sisters and brothers about everything that happened, it was a wholesome scene for him. He saw a tulkun playing by the reefs, it didn't seem like it was with anyone. He dove deeper until he reached the big guy. He let go of his ilu, the ilu riding away just a few seconds after.

"Are you with anyone?" Neteyam signed, getting the attention of the tulkun almost immediately. The tulkun horned his nose and hummed. Neteyam looked at the tulkun with amusement as he swam closer to it. He held out his hand and touched the spot just above the tulkuns eye. "I see you, brother" He greeted as the tulkun hummed once again, its eyes scrunching like it signified a smile.

Neteyam was taken aback as the tulkun rose from the ocean, taking neteyam by its fin. As it reached the top, it horned its nose, water splashing everywhere. "Disgusting." Neteyam laughed.

Maelie on the other hand was telling Kaerih everything that had happened. She didn't usually talk about boys or things like this but today she did. She talked and complained about the things that had happened. Her spirit sister laughed at her and hummed. "Maybe you are developing a liking for this, neteyam?" "No way sister, I don't like him. You know I don't do boys." Maelie signed even though she thought some parts of what her spirit sister had said was true.

The festivities of Awa'atlu had finally become. Underwater performances, traditional food and festive doings. The sully's had only experienced this two times, for the metkayina, every year. Maelie was enjoying herself by the big marui that was set up in the middle of the island. She was feeling happy after a long while of draught and uncertainty, she could finally feel joy. Tsireya wasn't far beside her; she was also having fun. The two walked out of the marui, talking by the ocean while they walked the beach.

Tsireya was a close friend of Maelie. Sometimes they would rather talk about nonsense to each other than a productive one with others.

"So, are you going to tell me what happened between you two or are we just going to tire our legs in walking?" She gestured to neteyam who wasn't that far from them. He was distracted by Aonung and Lo'ak talking to him. "Don't ask me, even I don't even know what happened." She stammered. Some of that wasn't true put some parts of it were uncertain.

"I know you Maelie, you wouldn't get all awkward over a boy if he wasn't something to you."

"But I don't even know if he is something to me. I'm so confused. Saying that neteyam is "just a friend" feels so wrong but saying that he is "someone" to me also feels wrong." She confessed.

"Does it really feel wrong? Or are you just..i don't know," Tsireya suggested, her shoulders rising. "Scared?" Those words once again hit Maelie in the face, but this time, she felt like it was partially true.

Neteyam just a few meters away from the girls was talking to Aonung about some riding plans they were hoping to do after breakfast tomorrow.
