Depuis le début

"You don't even act like you care half the time," she snapped, standing up now.
"You more worried about the TV than your own son."

He stood too, running a hand down his face.
"I'm here, ain't I? I ain't left you. I ain't left him. What more you want?"

Korina swallowed hard.
"I want you to be present. I want you to act like he's more important than a damn remote."

Eazy looked at her for a long moment. His jaw clenched.
Then he stepped closer and lowered his voice.

"You don't get it, do you?" he said.
"I'm scared too. You think this shit easy for me? I never had no real family, Korina. I'm figuring it out the same way you are."

Korina blinked. She wasn't expecting that.

"I ain't perfect," he muttered. "But I'm tryin'."

For a second, the anger in the room softened, just a little.
Kory let out a tiny coo against Korina's shoulder, like he was reminding them both why they were even standing there.

Korina closed her eyes and breathed in slow.

"Just... try harder," she said quietly.

Eazy nodded, but the way he looked away told her everything.
He heard her.
But would he change?

That was a whole different question.

Korina stood by the door, her arms folded, watching Eazy pace around with his keys in his hand.

"You in a rush?" she asked carefully.

Eazy kept his face neutral. "Yeah... got somewhere important I gotta be."

Korina raised an eyebrow.
"Where?"

"Just... business. You know how it is."

He kissed her forehead, quick and distracted, and before she could say anything else, the door slammed behind him.

And just like that, she was alone again.
Just her and Kory.

She walked back to the living room where Kory lay in his little swing, kicking his tiny feet in the air.
She smiled at him, even though her heart felt like it was cracking a little more every day.

She crouched down next to him, brushing his soft baby hair with her fingertips.

"You know," she whispered, "I really thought it would be different."

Kory let out a soft gurgle, his eyes wide and innocent.
He didn't understand a word she said, but she kept talking anyway, like he was the only one who would listen.

"I thought your daddy and me... we was gonna be this team," she said softly.
"Like ride or die. Through everything."

She blinked back tears and laughed a little, wiping her face.

"But sometimes... people change. Or maybe they was never really who you thought they was to begin with."

Kory grabbed onto her finger with his tiny hand, squeezing tight.
Korina let out a shaky breath.

"You my little man now," she said, her voice breaking a little.
"You and me, we gon' be alright. Even if it's just us."

She kissed his tiny forehead.

"I love your daddy," she admitted quietly. "Maybe more than I should. But I love you more. I promise, no matter what, I'm stayin'. For you."

Meanwhile - Eazy's POV
The bass thumped through the floor, the smell of liquor and smoke thick in the air.
