The room was too bright.
The air felt too thin.
Everything was too much.

Korina sat stiffly in the hospital bed, cradling Kory against her chest like he might break if she moved wrong.
She barely noticed Eazy standing there, shifting from foot to foot, trying to look calm.

"You actin' like he gon' bite you," Eazy said, a little smirk tugging at his lips.

Korina shot him a look. "Easy for you to joke. You're not the one scared out your mind right now."

He laughed under his breath and sat on the edge of the bed, his gold chain swinging lightly.
"You gon' be fine, 'Rina. You built for this."

"You sure about that?" she said, her voice small.

"I'm lookin' at you," he said, tapping her chin.
"You don't even see it yet, but you already doin' good. Real good."

She wanted to believe him.
She wanted to feel strong.
But the truth was, everything felt... fragile. Like it could all fall apart at any second.

A Few Weeks Later

The house was too quiet except for the soft whimpers coming from the bassinet.
Korina sat curled up on the couch, her hands wrapped around a cold cup of coffee.
Eazy was flipping through TV channels again, barely paying attention.

"So when are we gonna talk about schools?" she asked suddenly.

"Huh?" he said, not looking up.

"Schools. Kory. His future," she said, frowning.

"We got time, Korina," he mumbled, waving it off. "He can't even hold his damn head up yet."

She sighed. "That's not the point."

"Man, you stay tryna plan everything. Relax," he said, chuckling like it was funny.
But to her, it wasn't.

Korina bit the inside of her cheek.
There it was again - that feeling that she was in it deeper than him.

She let it go.
For now.

Until later that night, when Kory - now 27 days old - jerked in his sleep, making a soft startled cry.
Korina bolted upright, reaching for him, her heart in her throat.

"You good, lil' man," Eazy said from across the room, not even moving from his chair.

Korina shot him a sharp glance. "You not gonna help?"

"He just movin'. Babies do that," Eazy said lazily.

Korina picked Kory up anyway, holding him close. Her nerves were shot, her body tired.
And Eazy's easygoing attitude was starting to piss her off.

"Are you even serious about this?" she asked finally, her voice shaking.
"About raising him... with me?"

Eazy raised an eyebrow. "Man, where all this comin' from?"

"You don't even act like you care half the time," she snapped, standing up now.
"You more worried about the TV than your own son."

He stood too, running a hand down his face.
"I'm here, ain't I? I ain't left you. I ain't left him. What more you want?"

Korina swallowed hard.
"I want you to be present. I want you to act like he's more important than a damn remote."

Eazy looked at her for a long moment. His jaw clenched.
Then he stepped closer and lowered his voice.

"You don't get it, do you?" he said.
"I'm scared too. You think this shit easy for me? I never had no real family, Korina. I'm figuring it out the same way you are."
