The afternoon heat hit different when you were sitting on a cracked plastic chair outside a Compton house, chain-smoking and rethinking all your life decisions.
That's exactly what Eazy was doing, slumped back, arms crossed, his curls puffed up like a helmet. He looked like a man lost in his own damn thoughts.
Ren sat beside him, legs stretched, bottle of Olde English dangling from his hand. They'd been talkin' about life , deals, Cube's latest writing-then, suddenly, Eazy went quiet.
Real quiet.
"...I fucked up, man."
Ren blinked. "With the deals?"
"Nah," Eazy mumbled. "With Korina."
Ren groaned instantly, dragging his palm down his face. "Here we fuckin' go..."
"I fucked up, bro," Eazy repeated, louder this time. "I really liked her! Like-not just on some 'lemme hit' type shit. She's real. She different. And I came at her wrong. Called Shorty a bitch and had a whole girl sittin' on my lap. What the fuck was I thinkin'?"
"You wasn't, dumbass."
Eazy sighed so hard it sounded like defeat. "I ain't never seen a girl look at me the way she did, bro. Like I was dirt. Dirt, my nigga. You know how humblin' that shit is?"
"You shoulda been humbled a long time ago."
Eazy shot him a side-eye. "Alright, damn! You tryna be my therapist or what?"
Ren shook his head and swigged his beer. "I ain't gettin' in y'all drama. That's my sister, man."
"Not by blood!"
Ren glared. "Still counts."
There was a beat. Then Eazy leaned forward, hands clasped like he was praying to the Ren God.
"Help me, bro. Just give me a chance to talk to her. I won't be on no bullshit this time. I'll be chill. I swear."
Ren squinted at him. "Why should I trust you not to fuck this up again?"
Eazy tilted his head. "C'mon, man. You know I'm tryna change. I ain't even said 'bitch' in three whole hours."
Ren snorted. "Wow. Three whole hours? Put that shit on a trophy."
"I'm serious!"
He looked serious, too-serious and a little pathetic. Which, honestly, Ren kinda liked. Eazy needed to be humbled, and maybe his sister was the only one who could do it.
"...Fine," Ren said. "But if she tells me you looked at another girl's shoe the wrong way, I'm beatin' your ass."
Eazy jumped up like a kid who got picked for dodgeball. "My nigga!"
"Yeah, yeah-get off me."

Later That Week - The Same Dusty-Ass Garage
Ren had brought Korina back to the studio again. "Dre said he got somethin' new he wanna play. Said it don't sound like the old stuff."
She stepped inside, brushing past the mess of wires and crates, same shit from last time-but now, it smelled faintly of weed and cheap cologne. Real professional.
"Yo!" Dre shouted from behind the booth. "Cube! Come say what's up!"
A kid about her age stood up from the corner. He had a fresh cut, a thick-ass jheri curl, and a notebook filled with messy scribbles.
