momo yaoyorozu.
kyoka jirou.

the two girls knew each other since they were 11, they had grew up with each other, practically all each other had; but there was one issue with that. yaoyorozu was in love with the purple haired girl. one day in 1st year, she couldn't keep those feelings in anymore.

first year ::

the arcade lights blinked, shades of red and purple, they ran across momos face. kyoka had just beaten her at another game, a small smirk on her face out of pride. the smirk that made momos heart skip a beat. she stood there, admiring the shorter girl in front of her. she had her hands in her pockets, her mouth halfway open, about to say the words she'd practice for years in her head.

"kyo," she let out, quietly, softer than the music coming out of the claw machines, just loud enough for kyoka to hear her.

"hm?" the other girl spun around, tucking her hair behind her ear.

"i love you." momo let out in a shaky voice, it was fast. it was clumsy. it was like tripping over a step you thought was there. momo didn't look away after she said it, even though she so deeply wanted to, even though it felt like all of the air inside of her was now gone.

kyoka blinked once, then twice, slowly she let out "what?"

momo swallowed. "i love you," she repeated herself, quieter this time. "uhm, and like not in like. a friend way."

the silence after that was heart shattering, worse than the rejection she'd come up with in her head. she felt her pulse in her throat.

kyokas mouth opened, but it was like nothing could come out she then managed to get out "momo,  i don't- i didn't know you felt that way." in between stutters.

momo nodded. "i know."

"i don't feel the same."

momo smiled, but it looked wrong, it felt wrong. she looked at the skeeball machine behind jirou like it could teleport her somewhere else. anywhere else.

jirou took a step back. then another. "i didn't mean to make things weird, i just. i thought we were.  i didn't know."

her voice cracked. her eyes were glassy.

momo didn't move, she didn't cry, not until jirou did.

it was sudden, quiet. one tear and then another, until she was wiping her sleeve against her cheek and stepping back like momo was a fire she couldn't bear to get close to.

"i'm sorry," she said, her voice barely there. "i just can't, i'm sorry."

momo reached out, but jirou backed away too fast.

and then she ran. past the coin machines, past the kids playing air hockey, past the blinking neon exit sign.

momo stood there alone. in the light, in the noise, in the space where something used to be. and for the first time, she didn't know if it would ever come back.
