As I buckled myself into the front passenger seat of Sasha's cherry red convertible, I could feel the first cool breezes of the evening begin to sweep over the hot and bustling city, cutting through the waves of heat radiating off of the asphalt. I sunk into my seat, closing my eyes and relished in the relief the gentle wind brought. I was never one to look forward to summer, I much preferred when it was cold enough to require a hoodie or jacket, although I usually wore hoodies in summertime too and just tried to power through the heat. It was late May, so definitely not the hottest time of the year, but what little heat we were experiencing was enough to make me regret my wardrobe choice for the day.
I slowly opened my eyes again and rolled my head to look over at the two beautiful women I had the privilege to call my partners, both of whom had wet shoulders due to my sobbing today. Sasha was standing at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at Anne and her mother, who were still standing in front of the door saying their goodbyes.
Sasha had a big smile on her face, but the look she was giving Anne suggested she's been ready to leave for a while. I loved spending time with Anne's mom today, but I understood the feeling. Crying takes a lot out of a person mentally and emotionally, not to mention we did more walking than I normally do in a week. Needless to say, I was having to fight to keep my eyes from slamming closed and dozing off right there in the car.
After a few minutes of back and forth, Anne finally stepped down onto the front sidewalk with Sasha, waving goodbye to her mother as they both started for the car. Simultaneously and seemingly instinctively, both Anne and Sasha's hands drifted into the grasp of the other, their fingers interlacing and arms swinging as they walked. I smiled sleepily at the two as they approached, prompting a look from Sasha suggesting her heart had entirely melted from the gesture. I scoffed as she leaned over and whispered something into Anne's ear. This prompted them to face forward, a wide and goofy grin plastered on her face. She giggled as she made eye contact with me and whispered something back.
I raised an eyebrow at this, a smile on all three of our faces by the time they reached the car. Anne sat just behind me in the back seat, opting to vault over the door to get to her seat rather than use the perfectly functional entrance apparatus. She quickly leaned up and rested her head on the center console of the vehicle, looking up at me with that ever present smile. I think smiling may just be how her face naturally rests, it's very rare to see her with anything but. She giggled softly and grinned wider, "You seem sleepy." She cooed quietly.
I nodded in agreement and closed my eyes once more. "I FEEL sleepy." I responded, somewhat slowly. How Anne still had energy at this point was a mystery to me. I suppose part of it probably had to do with the fact that she plays tennis on a very regular basis, and the most exercise I'd usually get in a day came from the flight of steps up to my family's condo.
I heard Sasha slide into the driver's seat of the vehicle, slam her door shut, and stick the keys into the ignition. "Ready to get home, ladies?" She asked, turning the key and causing the engine to roar to life. I nodded once more, feeling the weight of my body sink further into the plush padding of the seat as the car shook at a gentle idle. I heard Anne begin to shuffle in her seat before planting a firm and wet kiss on my left cheek with a loud and exaggerated "MMMMMWAH!" She cackled to herself as she buckled herself in place, causing both me and Sasha to chuckle. My face grew warm, but I didn't have the energy reserves to react much more than that after the day I've had.
"Haw Haw Sasha, I stole the first kiss!" She sung, making smooching sounds to really drive her point home. I lifted my hands to my face and groaned, dreading what I already knew was coming, prompting another hearty chuckle from Sasha. "ACTUALLY Anne." She started. I opened my eyes to shoot a glare at her, but she reciprocated the look with a wide toothy grin.
