It was noon when Raphael dropped me home, we didn't say anything for once in a while. Instead, we just let the silence swallow us both.
I unclasped the helmet within my head and handed it to him. I didn't even bother to look at him, it feels like everything that happened today was just too much for me. And if it was too much, I know I am not going to allow myself dealing with it.
Maglalakad na sana ako papasok ng bahay ng marinig ko siyang magsalita.
“I'm sorry I know I shouldn't have said it,” he puffed an air. “If only I had known you don't like that kind of response . . . sorry hindi mauulit.” he uttered, almost sounded like a whisper.
Nanatili lang akong nakatalikod sa kaniya, as if wanting to hear more coming from his mouth.
“I know I said too much already but allow me to treat you a meal this weekend too, Zadi.” I heard him said and that made me turn around to faced him.
He wasn't looking at me but I could feel him, mustering his courage to spit something important like I was going to agree with it that easily.
“I'll apologize to you properly,” he heaved a sigh. “I know you probably won't be persuaded that easily so give it a time, I'll be waiting for your response.” he added and that left me hunted during my sleeps at night.
It was past two days and I'm still thinking about our last encounter, after finishing our report. We're both back in our normal days, but not completely strangers like we used to before. We would have small interactions but not that long, he would talk to me but only when we're in the same activity class group.
I know I was supposed to be happy and thankful because we no longer had reasons to meet, talk nor I could see his annoying rising eyebrows whenever he's annoyed at me or what. But somehow I felt like it shouldn't just end like that, we need more interactions.
So, that's when I decided . . . I'll gather my courage and talk to him about my decision later after our class.
“How's your meal with Raphael last saturday?” tanong ni Nyxie habang kumakain kami ng lunch sa loob ng classroom.
I know I shouldn't tell them about what happened that day, but I'm also aware that they're not going to stop nagging me about it.
I heaved a sigh. “We argued.”
Namimilog naman ang mata nang dalawa ng makalingat ako ng tingin habang nginunguya ang manok na ulam ko.
“Bakit? Anong pinag-awayan niyo? Bakit kayo nag-aaway?” sunod-sunod na tanong ni Nyxie habang nakatitig sa akin samantalang si Tyzza ay pa tango-tango lang sa isang tabi, tila ba sumasang-ayon sa mga tanong ng kaibigan naming sabik sa chismis.
“It's nothing important.” wala sa tunong sabi ko at nakita ko naman ang bahagyang pagkadismaya ni Nyxie.
Inilagay niya ang kubyertos na hawak at inabot ang mukha kong nakasimangot at iniharap iyon sa kaniya.
“You need to tell us what happened, come on. We're your friends, make it specific and detailed hm?” she mouthed while wearing a small smile, trying to persuade me.
I puffed an air. “Alright,” I continued. “'Di ba last week nakita nating may umaaligid na babae sa kaniya no'n?”
“Bakit? Nag-away kayo dahil do'n? Nagselos—” I cut her off.
“Hindi ako nagseselos okay? There's nothing to be jealous with, besides . . . that girl's his younger sister.” I frowned and I saw how shocked they are.
Their mouth were immediately formed into an "O" because of what I've said.
“He had a younger sister?!” they both echoed and all I could do is cover my ears.
I signed them to be quiet and they both apologize for it, I just nodded my head. Proof that yes, he had a sister.
“Likeee, when? I didn't even hear a single rumor about him having a sibling.” hindi makapaniwalang saad ni Nyxie at uminom ng mountain dew'ng binili namin kanina.
“I don't know, maybe ever since he was born?” I uttered out of nowhere.
Nyxie rolled her eyes. “I mean dzuh, of course kasi nga older brother siya. But, what I'm asking is just when? Nag transfer ba yung kapatid dito no'n?”
Halos pumalakpak naman ang dalawang tainga ko sa narinig at tumango. I knew this girl's smart enough to realize.
“Yeah, bago lang yung kapatid niya rito and the reason why we argued is that I just hate the way he treated his sister. Like, she's also human. And, it's not like they're not connected by blood for some reason. May special bond sila, they have the same blood!” bulalas ko at narinig ko naman ang mahinang pagtawa ni Tyzza sa gilid habang si Nyxie naman ay parang baliw na nakangisi sa akin.
I raised my eyebrows. “What?”
They both chuckled and that made me more annoyed. Like, my feelings that time were obviously valid. Alam kong normal lang din ang reaksyon ko about it, or maybe so I thought. Basta yun na yun.
“You dislike his action towards his sister? That's nice of you ha, that means makakascore ka sa kapatid niya.” Nyxie wink at me and I cringe about it.
“Anong makakascore? Ano 'yan quiz?” pabalang na sabi ko and she just let out a teasing eyes while Tyzza was just laughing silently beside her.
Nyxie fix her side bangs and took a breath. “It's okay, I understand you. Anyways, what he'd do then? Noong nag away kayo, may ginawa ba siya para mag kaayos kayo?” she mouthed.
“Oo nga, na o-observe kasi namin parang normal lang naman interactions niyo sa class eh. Parang walang grudges, not like before.” Tyzza added and I was surprised she expressed her opinion in just 1 minute straight, I mean it's normal to react like this since she was the most quiet in our group.
Napaisip naman ako saglit. “Hm, he did something though. He said it's now his turn to treat me a meal and he'll apologize to me properly once pumayag ako.”
“Gaga, ano pang hinihintay mo? Pumayag ka na!” may kalakasang sabi ni Nyxie na halos ikinabalintong ko naman dito sa inuupuan ko.
It's not like it's easy to decided, huh.
“Oo na, buo na rin naman na yung desisyon ko eh. Nakapag-isip na ako.” I mouthed and I saw how their small smile turned wide. Enough for me to saw their cute white teeths.
It was after our class and we're supposed to go home now when they both dragged me by the wall while staring at Raphael slowly packing his things.
“So, ito ang plano . . . we'll push you inside the class hm? Go and talk to him.” Nyxie uttered while grinning at me, Tyzza beside us is just watching our every movement at the back of this wall.
Para naman akong sundalo dahil sa pagiging alerto ng sabihin niya iyon, kulang nalang ay mag salute na ako sa kaniya.
I breathed heavily before mustering my courage and signaled Nyxie to finally push me.
But, I think the gods above hated me for life when my face hit the cold surface of the door in our classroom.
It made a loud bang that Raphael immediately look at my way, he didn't saw me at first but when he opened the door in front of me. My tears fell out of my eye because my goddamn forehead is aching too much, I thought I could finally see the real life bees flying across my head whenever you're dizzy or what just like in the movies I've seen.
I saw how his forehead creast and all I could do is to frown while my tears are dropping down my cheeks uncontrollably.
Titingnan ko pa sana ang direksyon kung saan nakatayo ang dalawa kung kaibigan kanina pero ang bumolagta sa mukha ko ay ang nagtatakbohan nilang likod papalayo sa puwesto namin ni Raphael.
