Chapter Nine
I almost choked on my tea. "Excuse me?" I spluttered.
"We're demons," Reason repeated clearly.
"Uh, I don't think so. I thought we were out to 'save the world from demons' or something equally as cliche?" I was extremely confused.
"We are."
"But demons are bad. We're supposed to be good, I thought you said not ten seconds ago?" I knew that for a fact. I knew my fair share of mythology, legends and fantasy beings. Demons were a part of that. They were bad, and they didn't exist.
Reason smirked a little. I could tell that she enjoyed being the one with all the knowledge, here. That was, if you could truly call it knowledge. I would just call it a very, very vivid imagination. "We're good, they're bad. That's all there is to it, really."
I was getting pretty infuriated by this point. "Look, I think you're probably high or something. That's a good story, despite the fact that none of it adds up. You should write a book. I'm going to go now."
I rose to my feet to leave the room, but Mystery spoke up. "Please, Clarity. Just listen. Just listen and you'll see."
There was something about her voice or even merely her presence that made me return, almost robotically, to my seat.
"Thank you," she said politely. She took one look at Reason and continued the story herself.
"Ever since the beginning of time, evil has lurked within the seas, deserts, plains and mountains of this vast planet. People who purposely strike fear and terror into the hearts of the people for their own form of sickening entertainment. Wherever there is good, there is almost always bad lurking nearby.
"This was the case in the place where we originated, also. The to follow Winter; replicate her wicked ways. They became black, like winter. Only six of us resisted. We are three of those. My closest companion is one of our kind also." She smiled fondly. I guessed she was referring to a boy.
"We have been together for many millennia, we six. Winter's legion outnumbered us by many. For those millennia, we have been at war. We have waged anplace where all demons were born into the world's eternity. The purest place imaginable; a place of white light. But it began to turn grey when Winter was created."
She paused with a light shiver. "Winter was a bad creature. She seduced so many of us with her charm of blackness. So many of our closest friends chose endless war against them for so long. There can never be peace where there is evil. We could never win. Winter's legion continued to grow in power, and our defences were rapidly weakening. We could only exist for so much longer.”
I didn’t understand that. What I had heard was that we were immortal. “I thought demons were immortal.”
“But we are, Clarity. There was again a battle, seemingly the last one. Much of Winter’s legion was destroyed. There are now only six left in her legion now, and only twelve of us at all. The only one who could create any more of us was cruelly destroyed by Winter herself.”
"So, we're the only 'demons' left in the world?" I tried to understand.
"More or less," she smiled sadly. "There is only you, Reason and myself; Tim and two others, who go by the mortal names of Simon and Bryce, as well as the legion of darkness."
I nodded, hardly believing what I was hearing. I mean, who would find it easy to take in that they were actually a demon, and you couldn't die... easily, anyway. How do you wrap your head around something like that? All your life you've just been a... well, not entirely normal, I'll admit- teenage girl from an ordinary family, living an ordinary life. And all of a sudden, it all just explodes in front of you.
