The next day I was sitting at the breakfast bar. My mom placed a bowl of fruit in front of me. Strawberries, blueberries, mango, grapes and watermelon. My lips twitched upwards despite myself, not exactly a smile, but close. I couldn't seem to smile these days.
"Honey, are you okay? I'm worried." My mom frowned.
Something twisted on my stomach. It was like last year all over again, my mom worried about me, because I wouldn't leave the house. Because I preferred being alone instead of partying like Sarina. The thing? This time, she was right. Something was wrong with me. Something had broken inside of me and I wasn't sure it could ever be fixed, or if I wanted it to. Because having a whole heart meant risking it to be broken all over again. I didn't want this pain to ever find me again. If it ever did, I didn't think I would survive.
I would never give my heart without asking questions first... Did I ever ask if he had a girlfriend? I didn't know. He never told me. He kissed me, and he had a girlfriend. He told me how special I was. How much he loved me. I wasn't special at all, and he had a girl at home the whole time...
I tried to smile to reassure my mother, "yup, I'm great. No need to worry." I said, forcing my voice to not crack. Everything feels forced nowadays...
She rested her chin on her hand, "oh baby, I'm your mother, I'm always worried." She gave me a small, sad smile.
I chuckled softly, ignoring the horrible feeling of worrying my mom, "I guess you're right."
We stayed quiet for a few seconds, "are you sure you're okay? You are quieter than usual." My mom gave me one of those looks mothers have their kids when they knew something they didn't.
"I'm fine, why wouldn't I be..." I said, hating the way my voice still broke every time I remembered what happened. I felt the knot on my throat again, I swallowed the sobs that threatened to come again. I cried enough. I told myself.
"I have a date idea." He said with a warm smile that made my heart skip a beat.
"And what would that be?" I asked, squeezing his hand once and twice. I couldn't believe I was finally living my own story. It felt like I was asleep all this time and I finally woke up when he appeared in my life.
"We could go to the beach. You'd read." He said tucking a piece of my hair behind my ear, his hand went to my cheek and without thinking twice I leaned into it, winning a wider smile, "and I'd distract you with my kisses... And you'll be really annoyed."
He leaned and kissed my cheek. I chuckled under my breath, feeling the heat in my cheeks.
"Or.." he kissed the corner of my mouth then. "We could just skip to the fun part... Hmm? What do you think princess..." He said kissing the other corner of my mouth.
"Yes." I said breathless and a little embarrassed.
He chuckled. "Yes what?"
"Whatever you want. I'm fine with both." I said quickly.
"You are so cute." He said and finally kissed my lips. I felt like I could breathe again.
