This Curse We Call Survival

Mula dari awal

We didn't speak. We didn't need to. We moved as one.

The knights became faster, with stronger attacks, but we're with two. We split up to make it harder for the enemy to strike us.

Then it happened.

A magic circle shone underneath me, and I was frozen in place.

And I saw it; they knew I couldn't run.

They turned their blades toward me.

Min saw it.

An opening.

I thought he'd come for me, my savior.

I waited for him to break through.

I begged for him to break through.

But instead of saving me—he struck.

His blade cut through the air, straight into the heart of the formation.

A perfect, clean strike.

He didn't save me. He doomed me—with them.

He didn't hesitate.

I wanted to scream. I should have screamed. But my voice refused to rise.

I just... stared.

How is it that the warmth that kept me going, turned cold once again?

Is it worth it?

To win—to survive— without me?

I don't want to die...

Min...

I don't want to die.

Thud.

Amongst those who were discussing, arguing— killing for the title of representative, another body fell to the ground.

'I got lost in my memories,' I look down at the corpse, tainting the green grass.

I hear the whispers behind me, fearing the turn of events. "They're killing for power,,, who would want to willingly give it to them?"

"Well,, will you stop it?"

None of the doubting reply, they can't stop it.

I glance back at them, before looking at the group in the center of the event.

The wicked, heartless, supposed to be victorious smiles on their faces.

That's the nature of humans and this game.

The powerful rule and survive.

And the weak die.

A thought crosses my mind, as daring and surreal as this world itself.

'I am powerful, I can help the weak.'

But at the cost of what? If I become the representative, I'll be a target. I'll die sooner than I did before.

I hold my arm, rubbing it to comfort myself, 'I can't save people if I put myself in front of death. Like Zuri,,'

She saved me. But I was left in a shock, vulnerable. Had it not been for Min, I'd be killed even after her sacrifice.

'Maybe,, I'm not that strong yet..'

A guy walks up next to me, watching the scene as he speaks up. "I have a feeling nothing in this game could give someone a leverage for too long."

I turn my head to him, he had brown hair, brown eyes, and a face I either never saw before, or don't remember.

"Is that your way of making yourself feel better about the situation?" I ask him, raising my eyebrow.

He replies with a chuckle, "Maybe? But I'm not saying something too farfetched, right?"

I turn to look at the woman holding a sword, as she just finished cutting a head off to gain the upper hand.

"That's true."

"If I start losing hope already, I won't make it till the end. We can't lose our goals to survive, and if it isn't for yourself, do it for someone else," he puts his hands on his hips as he watches the scene with me.

'He's right.'

"Anyone else who's against the idea of me being the boss here?" A female voice, stern but sly, calling out to the rest.

Nobody dared to utter a word.

The woman grins, resting her sword on her shoulder as she overlooks her so-called new privileges. "Well then~"

Nobody noticed her disadvantage, nobody knew.

The angel like being came to announce the end of the round, the quests, the sub-quests and leaderboard.

'Get a grip. I have to survive, to protect Zuri.'  I think to myself, and when I look at the leaderboard, seeing his name on there at the first rank.

'I have to pay him back for killing me too. Because I don't want to die again.'
