In the vast, bustling city of Celltopia, where organelles hurried about their daily tasks, Plasmane, the elegant and protective plasma membrane, stood as the city's gatekeeper. She controlled what entered and left, ensuring the cell's safety. But despite her importance, she felt... incomplete.
Then came Ribo, small, energetic, and endlessly hardworking. A ribosome with a passion for making proteins, she zipped through the cytoplasm, translating messages and bringing life to the cell. Unlike the other organelles, she didn't just pass through Plasmane's barriers but.. he stayed close, drawn to her presence.
One day, as he floated near her, she grinned. "You know, Plasmane, without me, this cell wouldn't have proteins. And without you, I wouldn't have a place to exist."
Plasmane's phospholipids tingled. No one had ever made her feel this way. Was this... attraction? Plasmane has never felt so appreciated before, "Um thanks..." she replied awkwardly, her cheeks tinted and her gaze hiding from Ribo. "Anytime!" Ribo grinned, holding Plasmane's hands in hers.
But they both knew friendships never lasts long in Celltopia.
Enters Lysa, the ruthless lysosome. A master of breakdowns of proteins, of organelles, and ...of hearts.
"Ribo," Lysa warned one day, her enzymes brimming with sorrow, "You can't keep floating free forever. The cell changes. Proteins age. and when that happens..." she didn't have to finish. everyone knew what lysosomes did to old, worn-out ribosomes.
Plasmane stiffened. "no. she's not going anywhere." but Ribo only smiled, her once-bright glow dimming. "it's okay, Plasmane," she whispered. "we all have our time."
Days later, she was gone, engulfed by Lysa, recycled into amino acids, her presence erased from the cell.
Plasmane remained, stronger than ever, protecting the cell as she always had. But now, every time a new ribosome formed in the nucleolus and floated into the cytoplasm, she couldn't help but hope, just for a moment...that she had somehow found her way back.
But she never did....
