A Captain's Defeat

I had with me an army
Of twenty thousand men.
I never saw you coming.
I didn't know it then.

You knocked upon the doorframe
And shouted, "Let me in."
I left my army trembling
To suffer you again.

You drew your gun and fired.
You missed and hit my heart.
Your hatred now expired,
You readied to depart.

But nothing was more shocking;
It happened next, you see.
My army stood there gawking
Instead of helping me.
