Steve POV
The sun could not possibly set any slower today. There's nothing that I want to do more than take y/n to the drive in and have a good time with her, but somehow it feels like it's taking forever. Not that me hanging out with her right now wasn't enjoyable, but I would much more prefer it just be her and I now instead of the entire gang.
"How do you feel about leaving right now?" I suddenly asked y/n. She was mid conversation with Soda who was back from work, and I hadn't realized that they were even talking because of how deeply I was thinking.
"Now? Steve it's still light out" she giggled at me a little bit, making my heart flutter for a second. "Yeah I know, but we can go for a walk and watch the sunset maybe? If you want to" I tried to convince her. "Oh that would be so nice" she smiled in agreement, "I love watching the sunset".
I knew the sunset would work.
"Amazing let's go then" I said getting up and grabbing her hand, "oh right ok" she spoke quickly following. "Have fun lovebirds! Don't cause too much trouble" Two-bit taunted us as we headed towards the door, "it's like you don't even know me" y/n lightly gasped and jokingly placed a hand on her chest. I quickly shut the door behind us and we began walking to the lot.
"I know a real nice place to watch the sunset" I explained to her as we walked, realizing that she'd never been to the lot before. "I can't wait, I've always loved watching the sunset you know. Have I ever told you about that?" She gushed to me, swinging our arms in sync with our footsteps. "No I don't think you have, guess that was a good guess on my part" I smiled at her before she continued.
"Well when I first moved away from North Carolina, I always comforted myself by saying that I was watching the same sunset as I was from back home, like the skies were connected" she stopped talking for a second and then shook her head saying "I don't know it was kind of a stupid thing that didn't make sense sorry".
I looked at her with a semi-worried glance "y/n I think that makes total sense and I love it, why would you ever be sorry about that?" "I don't know I just don't want to annoy you by saying stupid stuff" she sighed.
I squeezed her hand tighter "y/n have you been hearing me talk? Because I'm pretty sure most of what comes out of my mouth is just stupid talk so there's no possible way you'd annoy me. Plus, I'd let you know if you were" I nudged her shoulder jokingly making her give a small laugh.
"Here we are" I told her as we approached the lot, and we sat down in the grass watching the sun descend into the horizon. She laid her head on my shoulder as we watched the sky change from blue, to shades of pink and orange, and finally black. The birds had gone quiet and the air became cool.
A good amount of time had passed, so I wordlessly got up and stretched my hand out for her to take. We both had an understanding of where we were going next.
It was finally time for the drive in.
She picked a row of seats near the center and we sat down together, her clutching a bowl of popcorn for us to share. I was so excited to be here with her finally, after all of the waiting it was time.
My heart beat in anticipation, I really wanted to make this night special. I just really wanted her to have a great time and I didn't want to mess anything up, which was not unusual of me unfortunately.
She then reached over and grabbed my hand, intertwining our fingers which made my heart beat even faster. I looked over at her and our eyes met, I was so flustered I couldn't even think of anything to say so I just smiled at her.
God, I really like this girl.
Y/n POV
I could not believe it was finally time to go to the drive in. All of the waiting and anticipation, finally the sun had set and the movie began. I was so happy being here with him. I suddenly started to reach over and grab his hand without even thinking, but once our hands met my heart started to pound.
We're on a real date. Just him and I.
My touch caused him to look over at me, to which I froze up and he smiled, so the only thing I could think to do was return one. We both then turned our attentions back to the movie, just some random action movie I'd never heard of, but I didn't have a problem with that. As long as we were here together I would watch any movie.
The later into the movie it got the more tired I slowly became, so I leaned my head over and rested it on Steve's shoulder. He noticed my fatigue and reached his other hand across our bodies and rested it on my arm, slowly caressing it with his thumb. This caused our bodies to huddle even closer together than they already were, and I smiled into his shoulder as my cheeks turned red.
After a few minutes he asked me "hey do you want to go? We don't have to stay 'til the end of the movie if you don't want to". I looked up at him and nodded, giving him a small smile, and we both got up and walked out of the movie.
"I'm gonna walk you home, okay?" He told me as we began walking down the road, reaching his hand out towards me "yeah okay". I reached out and connected our hands once again, but he was the one who intertwined our fingers.
The walk home consisted of mindless chatter, the movie, the rest of our days, nothing too serious. "I mean I thought the movie was pretty good, but since you were having a snooze fest on my shoulder I don't think you'd agree" "oh shush" I rolled my eyes at him "I just had a long day I thought the movie was good I swear". "Okayyy" he drew out, unconvinced, and we approached the edge of my driveway.
"Hey so" Steve paused before I could say goodbye, "I just want to say that I had a really good time tonight" "yeah me too" I beamed in return. "Ok good, great! So..." he trailed off, suddenly losing his words and looking at the ground, "Steve what's wrong?" I asked him, now very concerned.
"What? Oh nothing's wrong I just-" he quickly closed his eyes and exhaled "Y/n I like you a lot". I smiled, quickly adding "I like you a lot too Steve" to which he lightly blushed at. "Right we knew this so-" he rambled nodding his head, making me chuckle at him. He looked up at me, smiling at me laughing at him, and then asked
"y/n, will you be my girl?".
"Of course I will" I smiled, then engulfing him in a tight hug. "Really?" "Yes!" I laughed at him again, slightly moving apart so I could meet his eyes. He laughed nervously at me, a smile growing across his face.
"Ok that's great because-" he began to say, but then suddenly cut himself off and kissed me.
