I heard them again--creak, pound, thud. I couldn't blame it on my imagination this time.
They were close. Heart thudding in my chest, I stepped down onto the floor. Darkness hung in thick curtains around me.
Creak, pound, thud, once more. My breath caught as I reached for a flashlight.
Creak, pound, thud, coming closer. Closer. Right in front of me.
I clicked the light on and slowly lifted my eyes...
The cold air crashed into me as my eyelids flew open. Light fluttered in from my window, illuminating my room.
I sighed, sinking into my pillow.
Only a dream.
