When she was thirteen, she dove headfirst into the world of heroics. She had been given the name Lightbringer early on, and Mark believed she had been perfectly named.
He had always been envious of her abilities. The fact that she had powers. That she got to be a hero. But now? Now, he was like her.
A small smile split her expression. Loren laughed. "I'm happy for you, Mark. Excited." She moved to sit beside him, knocking her shoulder against his. "You're gonna be amazing."
His smile only grew.
She stood up, then, suddenly. Put a hand out and nodded towards her window. "Come on."
He grasped her hand, following her without question. He said nothing as she guided them to her backyard, pressing off of the ground with ease.
She smiled, looking down at him. "You coming or not?"
He followed to the best of his ability. It was rocky and uncontrolled, his body spinning and turning in every direction, though the air was full of laughter. But, somehow, he managed to follow her higher and higher into the sky.
"Don't look down, don't look down," he kept repeating to himself, murmuring under his breath.
Loren glanced back at him, her brown hair held back by a hair tie. "You know, you're doing better than what I did when I flew for the first time."
Mark laughed sarcastically. "Sure. You're just saying that."
"No," she shrugged half-heartedly. "Kind of. But seriously, I was a mess. I kept running into things."
"You were also nine."
All he got in response was her boisterous laugh.
They spent some time in the air, Loren leading the way. However, after a moment of unbalanced flying, Mark dove down. He swerved wildly, barely able to see Loren following him as closely as she could safely. With a startled shout, he dove out of the way of a plane, headed straight for the ground.
By the time he collided with a road, Loren lowered herself several feet away, wincing. "Ouch."
———
Over the years, Loren Mason had grown quite used to her life being disturbed. Forced to stop at any given moment as if nothing had existed before it.
Leaving school at the drop of a dime was something she had mastered over time. Slipping from class unnoticed, leaving her school things tucked behind corners, and pushing from the earth. It had worried her father in the beginning, but he had come around eventually. Because the truth was, Loren was more like her father than what little she knew of her mother.
Soaring through the sky, the blue and white of her suit glinted under the sun, warming her skin further than it already was. However, when a massive boom shook the entire foundation of the planet.
When she arrived at the scene, she paused. Glancing down, she found a figure in black, yellow, and blue standing before the criminal. Black, windswept hair. A familiar stance.
