Ch. 3

"I'm- I'm actually inside one of the gateways.." I slowly stand up, my eyes dance around the surroundings. I look back down at the grey grass blowing in the breeze, I bend down and run my hands through it careful not to hurt anything.

"I wonder why we were able to go in this one, it may be my home, but you have no relation. Something isn't right with this, it's ghostly." Shadow's voice was gruff and I could tell he was in a deep thought.

"I know what it looked like before, but I haven't seen grass in over twenty years Shadow.." I hold my breath regretting even telling him at all. I clench my fists and rise yet again looking at the now dull palm trees.

His eyes were on me for a mere second, almost like he understood how it felt. But that is rather impossible, nobody knows how I feel, or what I've been through. 

"Sorry."

'what'

"Huh?" 

He won't look at me.

"I'm sorry." His tone was lower, his voice barely above a whisper.

"It's okay- It's not your fault Shadow." I softly smile.

'So he does have a soft side' Some time passed before we started to walk around, the silence was unbearable that was until we both heard it. 

"As long as I'm around, you'll always have a wingman!" A more high-pitched voice echoes from the distance. 

"Another mobian?" I question Shadow.

"I know that voice, c'mon." Shadow starts to skate to where the voices are coming from, I glide after him not too far behind. As we reach the beachside a few ghostly mobian come into view. I notice a pink hedgehog, a bat, a echidna and-

a fox.

"These are sonics friends, but they don't seem very lively right now." Shadow waves his hand in front of the fox's face before turning to face me.

I couldn't move, the friends kept repeating the same thing over and over but my eyes stayed on Emb- the fox. "He reminds me of someone I once knew." my voice full of breath as I step to Shadow. 

Shadow lets out a hum in acknowledgement, before glancing between the two of us. Both of us are in deep thought but for different reasons, I'm sure of it.

"C'mon, I think I know where to look." Shadow doesn't wait for a response and starts skating towards a tall mountain. 

Reluctantly I started to glide in the same direction, his orange glow made it easier to track him. Before I knew it we were both running up the side of the mountain, the gravity was different. Though I knew I could do this, this world made it feel airy and easier to do so. 

Once we got to the very top, there was a cave opening to which we had both stopped and looked inside when I took a glance at Shadow I could tell that this was all too familiar for him.

 I watch him do his own thing brooding around of course attempting to make any sense of the situation. "We need to go inside." It was firm, more of a command, so I followed.

 That was until we both stepped inside, and there was right in front of me the blueprint of where the paradox prism had been all this time. The only piece that was there was the luminescent yellow shard, that creates this gateway.

"This must be why everything is out of whack, and why even the world for the red gateway was so different when I looked inside it." I put my hands on my hips, coming up with some different scenarios.

"I can't believe how fucking careless Sonic is." Shadow looks down his ears pressed against his head, his fists letting out a sharp orange and yellow glow. 

"It's o-" I reach for him, "Stop saying that, you know nothing." Vemon, his voice was laced with venom and it was anything but kind, he didn't dare turn to even face me once. 

"Let's leave, I've seen enough." 

"Okay.." I let go of my deep breath. 

"I should be able to get us out of here with my powers, I just need to focus and I'm going to have to hold your hand." My face flushes and I attempt to brush my quills in front of my face.

"Fine." Shadow extends his hand but keeps it locked shut, I drag him down and sit on the floor using my energy to locate any sort of opening in my mind. 

'Aha' A small breach already closing, I close my eyes and it takes not more than a second before the both of us are outside the gateway sitting right in front of it.

We both stand up staring at the gateway before turning towards the red gateway, "We need to go back to that one." Shadow nods, but just as we start to jump for it we both realize, we never let go of each other's hands.

Shadow doesn't let me.
