BACKGROUND INFO:
I want to take a moment to explain a few things about the UFC and MMA to make sure there's no confusion as you read. These terms will be explained more later in the book, but I want to clear things up now.
The UFC stands for Ultimate Fighting Championship—it's a sports organization, not a type of fighting itself. MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts, which is a type of combat sport that combines several fighting styles, like boxing, judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and more.
The UFC has eight divisions based on the weight of the fighters. For example, fighters who weigh 145 lbs are in one division, fighters who weigh 155 lbs are in another, and so on. Within each division, fighters are ranked, with the top-ranked fighter being the one holding the championship belt. This belt is like a trophy, and once a fighter has it, they must defend it against challengers. A title shot or bid is when a fighter gets the opportunity to challenge the champion for the belt.
