The dance ended, but neither of them moved. They stood there in the quiet alcove, their bodies still close, their breaths mingling in the space between them. Elena felt the heat of Dominic’s body against hers, his touch lingering on her waist, not letting go. He was waiting, she knew that much. But for what?
Elena took a slow step back, her eyes never leaving his, feeling the pull of his gaze like a tether that wouldn’t allow her to escape. She had to test him. She had to know if this was real or if it was just a moment of fleeting connection.
“Do you always take charge like this?” she asked, her voice steady but tinged with curiosity.
Dominic didn’t flinch. His expression was unreadable, but there was a certain amusement in his eyes. “I don’t take charge, Elena. I offer it.”
Her brow arched, surprised by his answer. He wasn’t here to dominate, not in the way she expected. He wasn’t about control for the sake of it, but something deeper—something that, if she let herself, could draw her in even more.
“You offer it?” she repeated, testing the words. “And what’s in it for you?”
He smiled then, a sharp, confident smile that made her heart beat faster. “What’s in it for me is simple,” he said, his tone lowering. “I get to see how far you’re willing to go to trust me. To let go.”
Elena’s breath hitched, a thrill running through her at the idea. She wasn’t used to trusting people, especially not like this. She had spent years building walls around herself, and yet, with Dominic, those walls seemed to crumble without even trying.
“And what do you want me to do?” she asked, the challenge in her voice unmistakable.
Dominic leaned in slightly, his voice a low, velvet whisper. “I want you to stop pretending you’re in control. To stop overthinking, and just feel. Let yourself go, Elena.”
The words sent a shiver through her, stirring something deep within her. She didn’t know if she was ready to let go, to lose that part of herself that always held the reins. But at the same time, the idea of surrendering to him—the idea of testing the boundaries of control—was almost too intoxicating to resist.
“You think I can just stop thinking?” she asked, her voice teasing but with an edge of vulnerability she didn’t want to acknowledge.
“Not stop thinking,” he corrected, his hand brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. “Stop overthinking. Trust yourself. Trust me.”
It was a simple request, but for Elena, it felt like a mountain. She had spent so long being the one everyone relied on, the one who made the decisions, the one who always had control. Could she really hand that over to someone else?
But Dominic’s eyes, dark and steady, offered her something she hadn’t expected: safety. In his presence, she felt the weight of her own power lessening, replaced by something more fluid, more enticing.
Without thinking, she stepped closer, the gap between them closing until there was barely an inch of space left. She could feel the heat of his body, the steady rhythm of his breath, and it grounded her in the moment.
“Show me what it means to let go,” she whispered, her voice a mix of challenge and surrender.
Dominic’s hand moved to the small of her back, pulling her against him with a gentle pressure, a silent command. The air between them shifted, thick with unspoken understanding. She wasn’t sure where this would lead, but for the first time in a long while, she didn’t care. She was ready to follow.
