"i don't understand why i have to stay." i complain to my mom as i sit on the counter watching my mom run around the kitchen making sure we had enough food.

"because he's your brother, audrey, and it's his birthday party. we didn't really get to spend it with him and he didn't have a chance to celebrate since he had finals." she explains whilst taking a tray of pizza rolls out of the oven and setting them down on the counter. i steal one and pop it in my mouth immediately regretting it as it is scalding.

"mom, no one is going to eat all of this food, they're just going to drink."

"well, they can't drink on an empty stomach, right? now go upstairs and change out of your uniform, your brother and his friend will be here soon." i nod at her comment and hurry up the stairs.

i change out of my school uniform, which i completely despise, and slip on some jeans and a random shirt. i was laying on my bed and messing around on my phone when i hear the front door open and voices coming from downstairs. i run downstairs and immediatly notice the brightly colored hair.

"michael! happy late birthday!" i exclaim and hug my older brother.

"hey, sis," he chuckles and ruffles my hair, messing it up. "thanks. how's school?"

"hell. how's college?"

"awesome! i think i want to stay forever." michael is a freshman in college so everything about it is amazing to him. i hear a chuckle and i look behind him making eye contact with a smiling, blonde haired boy. "that's luke." michael introduced, "he's going to be staying with me during christmas break." i smile and extend my hand, "i'm audrey." he takes it and gives it a firm shake, "luke. nice to meet you." i couldn't help but swoon a little at his deep voice. we stared a bit too long at each other and continued to slowly shake hands.

"well!" my mom clapped her hands, causing us to break our gazes, "who wants some pizza rolls?"

it was just passed 11 pm and the party is in full swing. i could see why my mother insisted he have his party here instead of his small apartment a few minutes from here, the house was packed. i sat on the bottom of the stairs and observed people talking and refilling their cups at the table with an assortment of alcohol and food that no one really ate from. i told you so, mom.

i was so tempted to go upstairs in my room, change into pajamas and watch netflix or something but i had to guard the stairs and make sure no one goes upstairs and has too much fun.

i sigh and rest my elbow on my knee and place my chin in my palm. i didn't know anybody and i probably looked like a loser sitting in a corner by myself. i feel somebody sit next to me and i turn my head, meeting blue eyes with my brown ones. "you look lonely." luke chuckles. "i am, but you don't have to sit with me." i admit and look down at my plastic cup.

"i want to. i don't know anybody here besides you and michael and he's obviously a bit busy." he nods his head in the direction of my brother and the small crowd surrounding him as he tells a story making everyone laugh. michael was always outgoing and had tons of friends, unlike me.

"how old are you?" i hear luke ask.

"16. you?"

"19. i'll be turning 20 in july. and no, i didn't fail, i just started school a year later. that's why i'm a freshman." he states and i nod, looking away. i was never good at conversations because i don't know how to continue them or keep them interesting.

"how's school? you excited for christmas break?" he asks again after a while of us just sitting in silence. he sounds like an old relative i haven't seen in months.

"i'm still in school for another two weeks and break won't really be a break because i'll be in school for most of it." i complain. i'm kind of jealous that they're already off for christmas break since it's only the end of november.

"why won't it be a break?" he questions, looking genuinely concerned. "i have midterms the week i come back from break, so i'll be spending most of the time studying. I'm also failing math so my teacher is making me come in three times a week to go over stuff with those of us who are failing. i don't understand why though because she doesn't teach very well and just ends up confusing me even more." i confess and he nods his head while looking at the floor, contemplating something.

"well if you want, after your class you can come over to your brother's apartment and i could help you make sense of everything. i love math and i've been told that i'm a good teacher." he offers and i smile at his generosity.

"i'm pretty sure you don't want to spend your break from school tutoring some girl you just met. i don't want to be a bother."

"no, it's okay. i'm off for over a month and i'll just be sitting around doing nothing anyways. we can start sometime this week or next week if you want so you could get a head start." i guess i really could use the help and he was offering out of his own good will.

what could happen?
