I called Poppy that night and told her about the dress that I bought.
She gasped mockingly, "Not black? Am I speaking to my girlfriend?"
I laughed, "Ha ha, you're so funny."
Poppy laughed as well, "My dress that I'm wearing is emerald green. It's silky and has spaghetti straps. It's very pretty. Red and green, we'll be in Christmas colors."
"We're being festive, even if it's months in advance," I chuckled, "But in all seriousness, your dress sounds stunning. You'll be the prettiest one there, Poptart."
"Nah, that spot is reserved for my date."
I smiled to myself, knowing that spot was most certainly reserved for Poppy.
Layla and Erica's vow renewal was being held in a banquet room at a very nice restaurant about 20 minutes away. On the day of the ceremony and party, Poppy and I got ready for it together at my house.
I put on my dress, and Poppy's eyes widened, "You look absolutely stunning, my love. Like I said, you'll be the prettiest one there."
"Says you," I responded, and kissed Poppy lightly on the cheek so as to not mess up her makeup.
Poppy was a vision in her emerald green dress that looked gorgeous against her olive toned skin. Her hair was down and in loose waves, and she wore a bit more makeup than usual.
I pulled my hair back into a slick ponytail, and did my usual heavy makeup. My key necklace, which had been back on since the day Poppy and I got back together, was proudly on display.
As Poppy and I were about to leave, the front door to my house opened, and I heard my moms voice, as well as a male voice.
"Is that your moms' boyfriend?" Poppy asked me.
"Sounds like it is. Looks like I'm about to meet him."
"I'm happy for her," Poppy said to me, "Let's go down and greet them."
I had seen a picture of Isaac. He was a tall man with glasses and light brown hair and blue eyes. He was nice looking; I could see why my mom liked him.
Poppy and I walked downstairs, and we greeted my mom and Isaac in the kitchen.
"Wow, look at the two of you!" my mom beamed, "Absolutely stunning. Let me take a picture of you guys together. But first...let me introduce you to Isaac. Isaac, this is my daughter, Delilah, and her girlfriend, Poppy."
Isaac gave us a bright smile and a handshake, "So nice to meet you both."
"Nice to meet you as well," I said to Isaac.
My mom took her phone out of her purse and said, "Alright, you two. Pose however you want."
Poppy and I stood together, at first with my arm around her waist, and then another photo with Poppy kissing my cheek.
"Perfect," my mom said with a smile, "Alright, you two. Have a great time."
Poppy drove us to the restaurant, and we were led back to a private room. Tables were set up with assigned spots, and Poppy and I took our seats at a table along with all of our coworkers and their dates.
Sydney brought with her new girlfriend, Yvonne.
She smiled at Poppy and I, "You both look amazing."
We sat and watched as Layla and Erica stood at the front of the room and renewed their vows.
"My love grows for you each and every day," Layla said to Erica, "That'll never stop."
Poppy and I glanced at each other and smiled.
We all cheered when Layla and Erica kissed, sealing the renewal of their vows.
Moments later, servers came out and started placing salads in front of us.
"This place is boujee as hell!" Laura said, "Props to Layla and Erica."
There was a small DJ set up in the corner of the room, as Layla and Erica's nephew, Ricky, was a DJ, and they were taking song requests.
I knew exactly what song I wanted to request.
I told Poppy that I would be right back and walked over to Ricky and said, "I have a song request."
"Awesome, what's the song?"
"'The Only Exception' by Paramore."
Ricky nodded, "Got it. Adding that to the list."
I wasn't much of a dancer, but Poppy was, and I knew she'd want to dance.
As the song "Forever" by Lewis Capaldi played, Poppy led me to the dance floor and placed her arms on my waist. We swayed together, and Poppy gazed into my eyes.
"This is beautiful," she said to me, "The ceremony, restaurant, everything."
"It's all beautiful," I agreed, "But not as beautiful as you, Poppy."
Poppy smiled at me, and before she could say anything back, the song I requested started playing.
Poppy's smile brightened and she asked me, "Did you request this?"
I smiled back at Poppy and nodded, "I sure did."
Poppy and I looked into each other's eyes, and she said to me, "I love you, Delilah. So much."
"I love you too, Poppy."
She was all I needed...and my only exception.
End.
