I glanced at Poppy once more in her Shego costume.
I may hate her, but I'm not blind.
She looks good.
As Poppy glanced my way, I turned my attention immediately to Sydney.
"No way am I singing," I laughed, "80's music isn't really my thing either, unless it's some rock."
The party carried on, and I noticed that Poppy and Sydney seemed close the whole night.
I guess "Operation Poppy" is going well.
The last thing that I wanted, however, was for Sydney to get hurt. Sure, she had her flaws, but overall she was a sweet girl. Sydney is 21, a year younger than me, and she goes to the local community college for nursing.
At one point as the night was winding down, I saw Poppy and Sydney walk outside together.
I wouldn't be surprised if they're leaving to go hookup or something.
I decided to leave shortly after that. I could feel my social battery getting lower and lower, and I didn't want it to be at zero, as that would leave me feeling mentally exhausted. Even more so than usual.
I said my goodbyes, thanked Layla and Erica for having me over, and made my way out to my car.
As I approached my car, I noticed two figures at the car next to mine, and it totally looked like it was two girls kissing. One was leaning against the car, and then the other was pressed up against her.
As I got closer, my suspicions were confirmed that it was Sydney and Poppy.
"You taste delicious," I heard Poppy say to Sydney, and Sydney let out a soft giggle, and then leaned in again to kiss Poppy.
They were quite literally by the car next to mine. I was going to have to walk past them to get to my driver's side door.
The two of them didn't notice me walking up, so I cleared my throat and said, "Um, excuse me. I need to get to my car."
They pulled apart from each other quickly, and Sydney laughed nervously, her fingers lingering on her lips.
"Sorry, Delilah!" she said, "We were just, um..."
"Kissing. I saw you," I said, getting to my door as Poppy and Sydney moved aside. Poppy was looking at me, however she wasn't saying anything. In fact, she looked irritated by my presence, so I decided to call her out on it.
"No need to look so annoyed, Poppy. I have to drive home."
Poppy looked at Sydney and said, "Why don't you head inside? I'll meet you there. I want to talk to Delilah."
Sydney looked between Poppy and I with uncertainty, but she nodded and said, "Goodnight, Delilah."
I gave her a small wave, and she started to walk away.
When Sydney was basically out of earshot, I said to Poppy, "I wasn't purposefully trying to interrupt you. You were both in my way, I had to get home."
"Yet somehow, it still feels purposeful," Poppy narrowed her eyes at me. She was leaning against the car next to mine, facing me, and I leaned my back against my driver's side door.
I couldn't help but notice how good Poppy smelled. I got hints of honey, sandalwood, and musk, and it was near intoxicating.
"You can keep thinking that," I said to Poppy, "It wasn't. Though I feel bad for Sydney, she's about to get corrupted by you."
"Sue me, I like to have fun."
"So, you're basically admitting that you'll use Sydney for a bit of fun and then toss her to the side, just like you did with Emily."
"Please, Delilah. I'm sure you'd love to have some fun with me."
I narrowed my eyes at Poppy, "What the fuck are you talking about?"
"I saw the way you were looking at me tonight. Eyeing me up in my costume. I look good, don't I?"
Poppy had a smug look on her face, and I felt mine grow warm.
"You don't know what the hell you're talking about, Poppy."
"I know what I saw. Deny it all you want."
There was a glimmer of something in Poppy's eyes, and I couldn't quite place my finger on it. She didn't look as irritated as she had before, it was almost playful, as if she was enjoying fucking with me.
"I don't care what you think you saw," I barked back, "You're delusional."
"And you're in denial."
I rolled my eyes, "I have to go, Poppy. Night."
Poppy took a small step closer toward me, and instinctively, I felt my breath hitch.
"Night, Delilah," she said, looking right at me.
And she then walked away. It wasn't until I was watching her leave that I realized how fast my heart was thumping.
It didn't slow down practically my whole way home.
