"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" I was awoken by the shouting of my family wishing me happy birthday. Sitting up, I stared at them with a smile. My dad was holding a blue and white cake with a 17 candle on it. My brother Ashton and my sister Catalina were sat on my bed looking at me with bright smiles. Being the oldest, I was the first of his kids to have a seventeenth birthday and my dad wanted everything to be extravagant.

"Meredith! Open my present!" Catalina said, shoving a glittery gift bag in my face. I laughed, taking the bag from her hands and pulling out a card. It was hand written, and covered in glitter glue. The card simply read 'Happy Birthday!' and had hearts drawn everywhere. I pulled out the last thing in the bag, which was a Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal.

"This is amazing, Catalina!" I exclaimed while hugging the seven year old. I had a bit of a Disney obsession, so I really appreciated this. Ashton handed me an envelope which contained a coupon book for chores he can do for me. I grinned as I flipped through the book.

"Oh I'm definitely using this one today," I said while ripping out on of the coupons and waving it in the air, "one free car ride to and from school!" I hated driving to school, it was so boring. And besides, not driving helped me catch up on Tumblr.

"Aaw, does it have to be today? It's Monday!" He whined, falling backward into the bed.

"Yes today and I'm the birthday girl you have to! I thought you would be thrilled since you just got your license!"

"Ugh fine.

My dad was the last person to give me my present, it was a little black box. I opened the box and saw a locket. Not just any locket, my mom's locket. She died a couple years back from an illness. We still don't know what the illness was that killed her, but it still hurt. It was rumored that when she died from liquid silver intake. When she was seventeen she was kidnapped and injected with a mass amount of liquid silver. It must have killed her overtime.

I took the locket out of the box, it was a heart shape with and M engraved on it. It was kind of ironic since she her name started with an M and so does mine. A tear rolled down my cheek, I miss my mom so much. You can see a lot of her in Catalina, they had the same brown hair and facial structure.

"She wanted you to have it, specifically on your seventeenth birthday." My dad explained, sounding a bit choked up. Her death was the hardest on him, them being mates and all. He wouldn't leave his room for the longest time, I was so worried for him. I got up from my bed and walked over to my dad, giving him a big hug. Catalina and Ashton joined in and we just hugged for a while. A big family hug.

"Well," my dad said, "blow out your candles!" Agreeing to his orders, I leaned forward and blew out the two candles. I guess we were eating in my room, since my dad started cutting pieces of the cake. Breakfast of champions I guess. Once he cut the first slice, the cake was revealed to be chocolate.

I silently cheered in my head as he passed me the slice of cake. I nearly inhaled the dessert in the first minute of was in my hands. Glancing over to Catalina, I saw that her face was covered in blue frosting. Well, who am I to judge, my face was probably coated in frosting as well.

We ate the entire cake. My dad and Ashton had a total of three pieces each and Catalina and I shared a second one. I insisted we saved one slice of cake for Uncle Caspar. He isn't really my uncle, but he's my dad's best friend and beta so we consider him an uncle. "I'll go bring Caspar the cake." My dad said, standing up with the cake in hand.

"No dad I'll take it to him." I decided taking the cake from his grasp and walking out the door.

Most days Caspar was in the study with my dad, so I guessed that's where he was today. "Yo uncle Caspar!" I said while knocking on the door.

"What's up?" He replied looking up from a stack of papers.

"Got you some cake!" I placed the cake on the desk next to him.

"Thanks, so how does it feel being seventeen? Do you think you'll find your mate?"

"I hope I find my mate!" I admitted, besides my friends Caspar was the person I trusted most. He's so smart with all this stuff and doesn't tell my dad my secrets unless it's necessary.

"Just look out and don't do anything stupid." he warned "now shoo! I have to start setting up for your party and you are supposed to be getting ready school."

"Yeah okay, bye." I waved and exited the study and walked back to my bedroom.

Everyone had cleared out of my room, probably to get ready as well. I sat on my bed, looking at my mother's locket. Curious of what's inside, I opened it. A picture of my mom resided in the locket. She was holding a baby, that baby was me. It was back when I was three when the picture was taken.

Before I got to emotional, I closed the locket and set it on my bedside table.
