Plots I'm unsure about

Plot 6

Being a succubus wasn't so bad at one time... I mean, I wasn't always this way and I had pretty much the same upbringing as many other children - except that my parents weren't able to touch me in the same way as many parents touch their children without thinking. That was the only downside I could find in having an incubus and a succubus as parents. I am Alannah Masters and this is an insight into my life.

There were also lots of lessons that I had to learn on top of all the other lessons every child attends in school, mum and dad had shared these lessons between them - when they were home. Of course there were times when it was just mum or just dad, but it wasn't really necessary to switch from parent to parent although it meant that I got to share equal time with both my parents which was a nice touch.

In school, I'm always the odd one out because of the rules. The rules mean that only my face is allowed to be exposed - so no matter what the weather is, I have to be covered up at all times. It's been like this for my whole life even though we'll never find out exactly what powers I have until I become a teenager. Looking around the school, I think there are 4 or 5 others that will become metas one day and there are a couple of others I'm not too sure about. I don't know how I can detect this, I just can. I don't mind the rules at home because I know that mum and dad will be dressed in exactly the same way as me so it's nice to not feel like the odd one out so much.

It's no big secret that both mum and dad have taken the souls of others (sometimes, it's the only way to keep the world safe), we've spoken openly about it in my lessons and dad has explained that it's not as simple as taking a soul and having them spend eternity living in your head, although it can be just like that if the soul was a human one. It's the meta souls you have to be mindful of because when you take them you also take at least some of their abilities. Of course, some supernaturals such as demons are noted for having more than one physical - and each form has their own soul and unique set of abilities, these can really change your personality. That means that when you have a child, it could be born with just the ability to be a succubus/incubus or it could be born with the ability to be a succubus/incubus with the added advantage of whatever abilities from the souls their parents took.

I've already decided what I want to do when I leave school, and I want to for the Meta Protection and Enforcement Autority or MPEA for short. Of course, that means that most everything I've learned in school is going to be useless to me and I've spent many a lesson just killing time - but how do you explain to your teacher that you are going to do a job in a company that they don't know exists. It's better this way because if they found out about us, they'd only be trying to kill as many of us as they can out of fear and a desire to know all they can find out about us.

After rushing home from school, the first thing I do is my - that way, I have the rest of the night to focus on my meta lessons though they seldom start until after tea unless I corner mum or dad into a talk about something meta-related. Tonight's timetable says I've got fighting lessons with mum, excersise with dad and a discussion with mum and dad on why it's important to not be afraid to use your powers, whatever they may be. I don't really feel very keen on the 2 physical subjects tonight because I had double PE in school today and my leg still hurts a little from when I fell from the top of the climbing frame - but I know there'll be no rain check so I'd just better hope I don't get too wounded.

Once my homework is out of the way, I decide to find mum in the kitchen and get the lowdown on MPEA. I know that she can't talk about much of what she is doing at work until after the job is completed, if ever, so I stick to safe subjects such as what it's like on campus. "Hi, Mum"

"Hi, hun" Mum says.

"Mum, can we have a talk about work" I ask.

Almost immediately, I feel the go up and her sholders tense so I add "Don't worry, I just want to know what life is like on campus - not about what you might or might not be working on right now or historically".

She relaxed and replied "Sure, sweetheart. I'm sorry I'm so tense right now... we've got a big job coming up in the next few days".

I'd have loved to have known more about the job - but I knew better than to ask for more information than mum volunteered because the fewer people that knew the specifics of the case, the better and besides to know would be effectively like painting a target on my back which I had no desire to be.

Taking a deep breath, I asked "What's it like going for an MPEA medical?".

"Well, to start with, they check your health records are all up to date, then they'll want to form some sort of idea of what sort of meta you are. Because dad and I both work for MPEA already, they might pull our files and have a look through them to see what powers you might have. Either way, you can expect them to get you to try to do things as they try to work out just what types of powers you have. Have you had any signs yet?" She asked.

Excitement bubbled inside me as I answered "I'm healing faster now - I broke my leg at school today".

Mum mused out loud "We'll have to see if you can read The Book soon, then".

The Book is actually a set of books about the different abilities. It's supposed to be a kind of handbook that highlights roughly what we should expect as our powers themselves. In to protect the different types of meta, it's written around some very strong magic which works by making the pages blank or the words meaningless unless you are of the power type named on the cover of the book. In my case, it will be "The life changes of the succubus" I'll be trying to read from. Dad told me that he'd spent most of his young life looking forward to being able to read The Book in the hope that it'd list everything that he'd be able to do so that he could get his learning done in one fell swoop. I could almost taste his disappointment when he revealed that this was never the idea of the book - and he's still learning today!

I knew mum and dad had lived on campus once - and if it hadn't been for their desire to protect me from inadvertently taking souls before my abilities were detected and adequately honed, they'd still be living on campus right now!
