The carriage rumbled as it moved forward rocking you back and forth in place. You looked through the opening behind you to gaze at the vast cultivated field that lay beyond the thick foliage. Hundreds of people were lined up, all carrying out the various rigorous exercises their superiors were subjecting them to.

The beating of your heart quickening as you held in your breath, eyes finally lighting up with the bright light that you had lost all those years ago.

'5 years.

It’s been five years. Mom, dad, Eren, Mikasa… I made it.’

Your eyes brimmed with water causing you to close them shut as you once again relived what had happened all those years ago. When you lost your home, your family and above all else…

Yourself.

~*~ Flashback : Five Years Ago, The Fall of Shiganshina ~*~

Like any other day, the sun was out, lighting up the day and providing warmth for all the creatures it embraced. White fluffy clouds were scattered about looking much like a flock of sheep that were happily prancing about the boundless blue sky.

You were happily making your way to the bustling market, an intricately woven wooden basket-like bag tucked under your arm. As you ran through the streets, you greeted everyone you recognised as you passed by, your grin widening impossibly at the delighted greetings you received from them in return.

Finally arriving at your destination, you closed your eyes taking a deep breath in. Just as you did everyday, you could smell the freshly cut fruit over at the old lady Mary’s stall, the savoury scent of smoked meat, the sweet scent of honey.

You opened your eyes and gazed at the market in front of you as you cheered yourself on with a static grin plastered on your face, “Yosh!”

~~~
You exited the market with a basket filled of goods, huffing slightly in exhaustion as you held onto your knees.
After catching your breath you opened the bag and quickly ruffled through the contents and hummed in content upon realising that you had gotten everything you needed. Satisfied you ran off once more, making you way home - excited at the thought of playing with your friends now that you were done with your chores for the day.
As you running you stumbled across a familiar face - one of your friends. Since you had finished earlier than normal and that you were now free for the day, you figured that your mom wouldn’t mind if you had snuck of to play just a bit and as such you stopped in your tracks.
Just as you were about to call out to your friend, a loud explosion reverberated through the crowded streets. Like the rest of the people you turned to look at the source of the explosion. However, being surrounded by adults, you were unable to clearly see what was going on.
“What’s going on?”, such whispers spread through the crowd as you pushed your way through them. Upon finding and reaching a spot that enabled you to clearly see, you immediately looked at the part if the wall the sound had come from. Large volumes of smoke could be seen appearing from beyond the walls.
Soon the smoke cleared out.
‘It’s a head?’ You thought, your heart beating against your cheat rapidly.
While extremely confused, you quickly understood what was going on when you saw someone start running away as they screamed, “Titan!”
Immediately, the crowd burst into a flurry of panic and chaos. Some ran backwards, some people stood frozen in shock and disbelief while others were praying to the walls - asking them to save them all.
Breaking out of your shock, you dropped your bag to the ground as you ran towards your house as fast as you could with tears building up in your eyes. Being the young child you were, you were incredibly terrified and in your panicked state you failed to see the small rock that was in the middle of the street, causing you to trip over it.
With the momentum of your run carrying you forward as you tripped, you slammed against a stone wall. You coughed in pain and laid there momentarily before trying to get up. You staggered a bit but continued to make your way through the various paths that would lead you to your home, to safety.
Or so you thought.
~*~ End of Flashback ~*~
To this day, you could still visualise the scene of that one titan. The one that had taken your mother’s life right in front of your very eyes.With your eyes still closed shut, you frowned at the memory and clenched your hand tightly in efforts to snap you out of your daze, nearly drawing blood.
You took deep breaths as you calmed yourself, opening your eyes as you felt the carriage come to a stop.Grabbing the small satchel next to you, you jumped off the carriage and followed along with the others as they were directed to place there things and make their way to the training field.
A few minutes after you all had gathered and stood in your assigned places, a tall buff man accompanied by two smaller men appeared. The man would have had no hair on his head if not for the rather bushy beard he had, his eyes were sunken and covered in dark eye bags, his forehead filled with wrinkles and creases from what you presumed to be stress or a lack of sleep.
He introduced himself briefly as Keith Shadis, the Head Instructor of the Military Training Corps before proceeding to torment the recruits in what seemed to be a round of sudden interrogation. He was clearly intimidating them and many coward in fear only to be reprimanded once more. The man didn’t question all of the recruits however including yourself causing you to become confused.
Not too long after however you finally understood. He didn’t question the ones he was certain had faced imminent death before - those that had been there during the fall of shiganshina. How he knew who had and who hadn’t you didn’t know for sure. However, you felt as though the cold and harsh glares those survivors had in comparison to the meek and terrified gazes the other recruits had was more than enough of an indication.
Soon enough, the man had gone through the entire group of people and stepped back, leaving the filed with his arms tucked behind his back. The two people who had accompanied Shadis earlier then spoke, informing them that supper had been prepared and was awaiting them at the mess hall.
Not wanting to disobey orders on their first day, all the recruits followed the two as they lead the way to the dining hall. Being as susceptible to fall into a daze as you had always been in recent years, you had ended up becoming one of the last people to enter the hall. Most having even sat down with a serving of food already, chatting amongst the people that would now become their comrades.
You walked through the door and scanned the hall only to suddenly stop in your tracks as you saw two very familiar figures sitting down on one of the many tables.
“E-eren? Mikasa?”
Rewritten: August 2020
Hahaha. It's been 3 years since I last updated and as you can probably tell my writing style has changed a lot. I'll be honest and tell you that I won't be updating regularly and that I'm only going to be rewriting the chapters for now.
I'll only be doing this in my spare time which is admitedly not a lot with school and like a different story that I've been working on with my friends.
-SeaWeiner (Formerly Juondy)
P.s. do not ask bout the change of names; the back story is... questionable at best.
Also I'm lowkey stressing on how to progress this story knowing the recent developments in the manga.
