The next morning, Sarah got up with renewed energy. Today, she was going to gather everything for the little ones, especially for Jessie as well. She skipped down to the farm with the older children after saying goodbye to her best friend, also to the other sick little children too. She sneakily gathered the food she needed: green vegetables, meat, milk, and eggs. The green vegetables were simple enough; she kept some when she and her other friends were picking them during the daily harvest and put them in her pouch. The meat was also fairly simple, take some from the meat storage box and sneak it into her pouch too, hoping it wouldn't spoil. Then the milk was difficult as she wasn't allowed to milk the cows yet as she was still too young. Until she realized that there would be jars for milk in a cooler off to the right, she grabbed five jars of milk and walked out of the barn. Finally, there was the eggs, she paled when she walked into the chicken coop, the chickens clucking and the farmer chuckling with them. How was she supposed to get the eggs now!? She waited until the farmer left and grabbed the beautiful white eggs awaiting for her.
After the long day at the farm, she clutched her pouch tighter and walked into the orphanage door, the sound of the little kids shrieking and the middle kids coughing greeting her ears, she washed up for dinner and ate her meal of corn and water with a happy look on her face. After dinner, she trotted up the stairs to the bedrooms. She went to Jessie's room first to see her, as she was still a little worried even if she knew it wasn't fatal. She gently knocked on the door, to which Jessie responded with a faint "Come in." She walked in and laid out an egg, some meat that she had asked Mrs. Alder to cook, a few pieces of collard greens, and a jar of milk. "Eat this, it'll make you feel better." Sarah instructed kindly to Jessie, who slowly opened her mouth to receive the food Sarah laid out. Sarah gently put parts of the food in, one at a time, so Jessie could eat it with no trouble. After Jessie was done, Sarah told Jessie to sleep, as it would make her feel better. As Jessie laid down to sleep, Sarah left the room to go feed the other sick middle children that had fallen ill to Pellagra, as the doctor called it. She smiled to herself, knowing that she would be doing a good service to the middle kids that had fallen sick.
During the next day, she woke up with a smile on her face. Jessie would be alright, so would the other kids too! She gently woke up Jessie and beamed at her. "Jessie, are you okay? I know you were feeling down before but I know you'll be okay now!" Sarah laughed gleefully as she looked at Sarah's complexion. It was no longer the pale, gauntly, white skin color she had had since the beginning of the disease. She also was speaking better, in a strong, powerful voice instead of a meek and sickly tone of accent. The two girls went downstairs to eat breakfast, Jessie being served milk with hers and Sarah plain water. After they ate, they went outside to run around and play in the orphanage's grassy lawn. After a few hours, they went back inside for dinner after washing up, then fed the little ones before eventually going to their room for bed.
"Goodnight Sarah/Jessie." Both the girls said in unison before they giggled. Sarah went to sleep with happy dreams and warmness, knowing that she did something good for Jessie and the middle children.
