Where it began

The air was filled with the unsettling sound of screaming as his fist connected with my face. I groaned as I rolled over, curling in on myself in a desperate attempt to shield myself from the blows. Even though my brain was foggy from the pain, my mind was filled with memories from the very beginning, back when I first sensed that he was trouble.

If you ask anyone else, this man is a saint. He's probably the best person you could ever meet. According to them, he's soft spoken, gentle, caring, and overall one of the most dedicated guards they've ever seen. They admire him for his calm personality, and the way he constantly tries to go above and beyond for his line of work, but if you ask me, he's an abusive asshole who doesn't give a shit about the family he married into. The only reason he did it was so that he'd have a picture perfect family to brag about and show off, it wasn't even about love or commitment.

It all started years ago, when I was about 5 or 6. My father passed away in a tragic hunting accident, at least that's what the guards told me. When Daelen Stormrider showed up at the door to tell us the horrific news, he was the definition of caring, kind, and supportive. He made us all believe that he was this hero. He gave her his address and told her that if she ever needed any help, to call for him. It seemed like a nice gesture at the time, considering what we've been through. Although, when she finally did, our life turned around for the absolute worst.

Their marriage allowed Daelen to absolutely destroy our lives. Daelen, who was once someone we could look up to for support, has now been continuously drinking, just to come home and take out his anger and frustrations on me. My mother never found out for the longest time because of the fact that she worked as a nurse, constantly working late in order to patch injured people up during battles or whenever people needed any sort of care. It wasn't until I turned 15 that my mother was finally aware of the abuse I was dealing with, but by then it had already gone too far. Once she found out, Daelen's anger was shifted onto her as well. He had begun letting out his rage out on her, causing her to become terrified of him. I begged her to reach out to somebody and get us help in order to escape this vicious cycle, but she instead told me she wouldn't be doing that, and ordered me to keep my mouth shut. Being 15, I couldn't really argue with her. Now, at the age of 17, I plan on leaving as soon as I find an opening, most likely while the pair are at work.

Suddenly, I was yanked back to my harsh reality by a sharp, aggressive kick to the ribs. I groaned out in agony as I rolled over onto my side, coughing up a bit of blood as I went. I was in serious amounts of pain, wishing this could all be over. This asshole never gives up, does he? I thought as I glared up at him, astounded at how he could continue this for so long. This has been going on for what felt like an eternity, but in reality had actually only been about an hour. In its own twisted way, his relentless pursuit was almost admirable, although it didn't help lessen any of the pain or suffering I was experiencing. Normally, this continues on until he either falls asleep, or eventually gets bored, but it seemed like today he was determined to continue beating me until I couldn't move.

"I want you to remember every single day how worthless you are. You're just a little pathetic bitch who doesn't deserve a place on this earth. You should be glad I stepped in to be a dad, I could've just left you and your mom to suffer, and you know what? I should've, because you're all just a waste of my time." He spat out the harsh words before landing another aggressive kick to my stomach, resulting in more blood falling past my crimson coloured lips. Letting out a dry laugh, void of any actual humor, I glared up at him.

"Maybe if you weren't such a pathetic asshole, you would realize that what you're doing is completely against your line of work. Just imagine if I ran out and told everyone what you've been doing. Imagine how they'd react, seeing the bruises, and the blood all over me, claiming that you were the one to do this to me. Imagine the look on their faces when they hear that the man they've been looking up to all these years has actually been abusing his own daughter." A sly smirk tugged at my lips as I looked up at him, savoring the mix of emotions that crossed his face. His initial anger formed into a look of embarrassment that spread over his face, and I couldn't help but relish in the sight. As I watched his pride crumble, it only seemed to fuel the satisfactory feeling that I had.
