Kaia Reed woke up to the sound of rain tapping against her window. It was one of those mornings where getting out of bed felt like a crime, but she had a routine. A quick shower, some black coffee, and she was out the door, already mentally preparing for the day. She liked her job at the flower shop. It wasn't glamorous, but it was peaceful, and Kaia preferred it that way.
She grabbed her usual order at the café down the block, barely glancing at the barista as she snatched her coffee. People, in general, weren't her thing, and she was good at keeping to herself.
By the time she arrived at the shop, the usual morning bustle was over, leaving her to tidy up, arrange the flowers, and wait for the next customer.
It was a little past noon when the doorbell chimed soft but sharp, like it had been designed to catch your attention.
Kaia didn't look up at first. It was just another customer, probably some businessman picking up a bouquet to impress his girlfriend. The usual.
But then, she felt it an undeniable shift in the air. The hairs on the back of her neck prickled, and she glanced up.
A man stood in the doorway, tall and dressed in all black, his presence demanding attention without him even having to try. He had that look, the kind of sharpness that made you wonder what exactly he did for a living. His cheekbones were cut like stone, and his eyes dark, almost too dark looked like they could swallow you whole.
Kaia wasn't intimidated. If anything, it made her want to roll her eyes. She could deal with whatever this was, and she would.
"Do you work here?"His voice was low, too smooth to be casual, with an edge that made her raise an eyebrow.
"Obviously,"Kaia shot back, flicking her hand dismissively before adding, "and unless you're blind, the flowers should've clued you in."
He didn't flinch, not even a little. "I need something specific."
Of course, he did. It was always something. He slid a slip of paper across the counter, and Kaia picked it up, scanning the strange order. White camellias, three red roses, one black calla lily.
"Lucky for you, we've got everything you're asking for," she said, her voice dripping with a mix of sass and sarcasm. She didn't even wait for a response before turning to the back to grab the flowers.
As she gathered them, she couldn't help but wonder what kind of man ordered such a strange combination. And why the hell was he so intense? She could hear snippets of his phone conversation, his words crisp and clear through the backroom door.
"Handle it," he said. "No one slips through."
A small, curious frown tugged at the corners of Kaia's mouth, but she shook it off. Whatever game he was playing, she wasn't interested.
When she returned, the man was standing by the window, his back to her, his jaw tight. He had that same cold, controlled aura, like he was used to being in charge.
She handed him the bouquet without a word, watching as his fingers brushed hers ever so slightly. For a second, Kaia was sure she felt something shift, a strange jolt she couldn't quite place.
He looked at her then, really looked at her, his dark eyes piercing.
Without another word, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a wad of cash, sliding it across the counter. It was more than enough to cover the bouquet, leaving Kaia with a generous tip.
She raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. He didn't flinch at the extra cash, just gave her a small nod.
And with that, he turned and walked out, leaving Kaia standing there, her pulse racing in a way she wasn't ready to admit.
She pushed the thought aside and got back to her usual routine. The shop wasn't going to run itself, and she didn't have time for distractions. But no matter how hard she tried, her mind kept drifting back to the man his intense stare, the way he hadn't seemed bothered by her attitude, and the odd feeling that had crept up when their fingers brushed.
The afternoon passed slowly, but the feeling didn't go away. Every time the door chimed, her heart would skip a beat. Was it him again? It never was.
Later that night, Kaia locked up the shop, stepped out into the cool air, and started walking home. The city felt quieter, the streetlights casting long shadows on the pavement. She tried to shake off the weird encounter. He was just some guy, right? Whatever.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Probably a message from her friend. But no. It was a text from an unknown number.
She clicked on it, expecting some random spam. But the words on the screen made her stop dead in her tracks:
"I didn't get your name earlier. It's Kaia, right? I'm sure we'll be seeing each other again. -L"
Kaia's hand tightened around her phone, confusion flooding her. How the hell did he get my number?
She glanced up, as if expecting to see him standing on the corner, watching her. But no one was there. Her pulse quickened. Was this some kind of joke?
The nerve of him. She didn't even give him her number, and he just... what?
Kaia quickly typed a response but stopped herself. No, she didn't need to deal with this right now. She wasn't about to be some damsel in distress over some creepy guy who thought he could just show up and start acting like they were going to be best friends.
Instead, she shoved her phone in her bag, walked a little faster, and tried not to let her mind spiral. She wasn't going to waste any more energy on this.
But deep down, she couldn't deny it. She knew this wasn't over. It was just the beginning of whatever this mess was going to turn into. And whether she liked it or not, that meant there was more to come.
Now Kaia is more pissed and questioning how this guy got her number. She's definitely not going to make it easy for him.
Kaia's phone buzzed again, dragging her out of her thoughts. She glanced at the screen and saw a new message from the same unknown number
"You should have answered my text."
Her blood ran cold. She hadn't replied, but she never thought he'd actually come after her. Was he tracking her now?
She snapped her phone shut and shoved it in her bag, her steps quickening. This was getting too weird. Too dangerous. Her instincts were screaming at her to be careful, to get home as fast as she could.
As she turned the corner, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. She felt... watched. Her heart hammered in her chest, each footstep echoing louder than the last. Was someone following her? She glanced over her shoulder, but no one was there.
Her breathing quickened, but she tried to calm herself. It's nothing. You're overthinking it.
But then, before she could turn onto her street, a hand shot out from behind a car and yanked her into the shadows. A sharp gasp escaped her lips as her body was slammed against the side of the vehicle, and the cool metal pressed against her skin.
She struggled, but the man's grip was firm, his other hand quickly covering her mouth. "Quiet," he hissed in her ear, his breath cold and steady against her neck.
Her eyes widened in shock as she tried to push him off, but he was stronger too strong. The scent of cologne filled her nose as he dragged her back toward a black SUV parked just ahead, the door swinging open.
"Let go of me!" she shouted, trying to break free, but his grip only tightened.
She could feel her pulse pounding in her ears as he threw her into the back of the SUV. Before she could even blink, the door slammed shut, and the car sped off into the night.
Kaia's mind raced as she stared at the tinted windows, trying to calm herself. What the hell is happening?
Then his voice, low and ominous, cut through the silence. "I told you we'd see each other again."
Kaia's pulse thundered in her ears as she stared at him, her mind scrambling for answers. Why? Why was he doing this? What the hell did he want with her?
