Carina had moved back to Seattle a few days ago. She was in the break room at Grey Sloan, where she'd been hired as an ob-gyn. She'd recently turned thirty-three and hadn't lived in Seattle since leaving to attend medical school in Silicon Valley, at Stanford, south of San Francisco, where she'd also done her medical residency.
After high school, she went to Stanford for a four-year undergraduate education to obtain her Bachelor's degree, then another four years to obtain her Medical Degree (M.D.), followed by a four-year residency at San Francisco Women's Healthcare, Inc. to obtain her OB-GYN diploma, and then a two-year fellowship to specialize in maternal-fetal medicine. She now wanted to move back to Seattle, as her mother had recently discovered that she had cancer, and she had wanted to move closer to care of her. It felt strange, though, as she hadn't lived there for fourteen years. She'd only been here from time to time, notably to see Lucia or her friends from high school.
So Carina was sitting in the break room, having seen Addison enter, Dr. Montgomery being the head of her neonatal service.
-"How are you, Dr. DeLuca?"
- "I'm fine, thank you, and you?"
- "fine thank you" she had poured herself a coffee and pointed to a poster that hung on the wall to the brunette.
"Are you going?"
- "where?"
- "it's been asking all the doctors to go and support the local fire station. They're doing a fundraiser in the form of a car wash on Saturday to pay for their former captain's funeral. He died saving their lives. He had been forced to retire because of cancer, but when he heard on the radio that his former team, including his daughter, were trapped in a burning building, he didn't hesitate for a second and went to ventilate the ceiling. He cut a hole in the tin roof of a storage unit's rental space and fell into the fire. And while they got out, thanks to the smoke finally clearing, he perished in the flames."
- "my god! but that's horrible!"
-"yes... And since he was in forced retirement... The Seattle Fire Department refuses to pay for his funeral... He passed away two weeks ago now... We did offer to set up a fund for Captain Herrera, but they refused, saying it was up to them to find a solution... So Chief Bailey has asked all the hospital members to go and have their cars washed there to support them.... Her husband works at that station."
- "Saturday you say?"
- "Yes, they've already done a session during the week... They split into two teams and Saturday is the A and C team."
- "it's the..."
- "Station 19, it's six hundred meters away"
-"I'll do that, then. Thank you, Dr. Montgomery"
- "thank you doctor DeLuca, I know you haven't been here long and you didn't know him, but it would be a very nice gesture"
- "it won't be a bad thing my car. I haven't had time to clean it since I got back from San Francisco."
- "perfect then, two birds with one stone!"
So Carina had gone to Station 19 on Saturday to have her car washed and do a good deed at the same time.
She was in her car listening to Taylor Swift ft Post Malone's Fortnight while waiting for her turn. She had started singing a few lyrics after resting her head in her hand and her elbow on the open windowsill.
-"...All of this to say I hope you're okay
But you're the reason
And no one here's to blame
But what about your quiet treason?
