I knew I was in a coma.  I could hear people talking to me, I could hear the beeps of the hospital machines, I just couldn't wake up.  At all.

"Hey, Audrey.  It's Mackenzie.  Some people say you can hear what we're saying, some people say you can't.  I know you can.  You're going to be ok."

I fought so hard to move, to wake up, to do anything, but I just couldn't.

"Everyone at school misses you.  I wish you could see the stack of cards and balloons and gifts you have here.  I brought them over from the school for you.  Even though it's only been two days, I miss you so much.  The doctor said that even if you do wake up, you won't ever be the same again."

Mackenzie paused.  The sounds of the machines filled the gap in the coversation.

"I signed up for swim.  I'm really excited about it, but I don't think it will be as fun if you aren't there.  I miss you so much, Audrey.  You're my best friend and I love you so much.  I just want you to know-"

And then I flatlined.
