1943
"Step back."
You stared at the officer infront of you. You took few steps back as he looked you up and down.
"Turn around." He said.
You turned around and spread your arms a bit. You decided to enlist yourself in the military. You were convinced they'd give you a chance to prove yourself. To show you could fight. Your father had been training you for years.
"Alright." He said.
Before you knew it you got an accepted stamp on your application. You smiled brightly.
"You'll hear from us." He said. "Next."
You headed outside and decided to wait on one of the small benches. It didn't take long for you friend to arrive, disappointment in his face.
"You got rejected again?" You asked.
Steve sighed and sat down next to you. You and Steve had been friends for ages. You had always liked his personality. He wasn't the biggest or strongest guy, but he had a good heart. He always stood up for you, he made you laugh and he a good sense of right and wrong.
"Of course I did. Asthma is just one of my many issues."
He sighed in frustration as he sunk into the bench you were sitting on. He had tried with so many different forms. It was almost sad. You felt bad for him. Steve never really got the growth he was hoping for. He was 24 at this point and you were 22. You were almost taller than he was.
"I enlisted." You smiled
Steve turned to you and raised his brows. To fight? They'd never accept a girl to fight. Maybe to entertain the soldier. You were pretty enough for that. At least, in his eyes.
"I don't think they accept girls in the military. Not to fight at least."
"I'll change their mind when I show them what I can do." You smiled.
Steve admired your courage. You probably beat up more people for him then he did for you. He didn't mind though. He never walked away from a fight. Your dad had finally taught you how to shoot a gun and fight. You tried to teach Steve how to fight but he was just too weak.
"Do you want to join me to the movies tomorrow?" Steve asked.
You smiled. You hadn't seen a movie with in awhile. You wanted to go. You loved hanging out with Steve. But your dad needed help around the house. He was getting older and really needed your help. You had moved out, but he had called you yesterday.
"I'd love to but I promised my sister to help out with dad."
"You should totally do that. I'll go on my own."
You always felt bad for him when he said that. You knew he missed you, life had really been getting in the way.
"Are you sure? It's been awhile since we hung out together."
Steve grinned. He looked at you and passed you a comforting smile. He was way too sweet.
"Your dad is very important. You should go help."
"I'm going to the stark expo after. Are you going?"
Steve shrugged.
"I didn't plan it yet. I might."
"If you do, make sure to look for me."
He laughed and nodded. If anyone could change his mind.. it was you.
-
"I can do this all day." Steve spoke after getting another hit to the face.
At this point he really wished you were there with him. But he refused to give up. He'd been beat up more times than he could count. You'd always take care of him afterwards though. He liked that.
He tried to punch the guy infront of him but he blocked his arm and punched him so hard that he flew into the garbage cans behind him. He laid there for a moment. Regretting his life choices.
"Hey! Pick on someone your own size."
Steve pushed himself up and bend forwards to catch his breath while Bucky chased the guy away.
"Sometimes, I think you like getting punched." Bucky sighed.
"I had him on the robes."
Steve wiped some blood from his eye and turned to him.
"How many times is this?"
Bucky opened his enlisting form and looked at it.
"I can't believe Y/N supports you in this. Oh, you're from Paramus now?"
Steve wiped the dirt of his clothes and sighed. He hated it when Bucky pulled you into it. Yes, you supported him.. but it wasn't your idea. He did this. He wanted this.
"You know it illegal to lie on the enlistment form?" Bucky asked. "And seriously? Jersey?"
Steve wiped the blood of his mouth and turned to bucky, a look of surprise crossed his face as he saw him in uniform. To him it looked amazing, bucky was so lucky he got accepted.
"Did you get your orders?" He asked.
Buckys smile faded as a bit of anxiety shined through.
"The 107th. Sargent James Barns, shipping out for England first thing tomorrow."
Steve looked away from him, clearly jealous. He shook his head and let out a sigh.
"I should be going."
Bucky smiled and wrapped his arm around him, pulling him out of the alley. He wanted to try to make him feel better, get his mind of this.
"Come on man! My last night! I got to get you cleaned up."
"Why, where are we going?"
Bucky handed him a news paper. He unfolded it and saw the stark expo. Of course, you had told him everything about it. He wasn't sure if he wanted to go.. but it was Buckys last night and he didn't want to disappoint him.
"The future." Bucky smiled.
It was done, he was going to the stark expo and so were you. After a long day of helping around the house, you were ready for some relaxation.
"Is Steve coming tonight?" Your sister asked with an amused smile.
You rolled your eyes as you reached for your bag.
"I don't know. He hasn't told me if he wanted to come. Besides, we are just friends."
"Keep telling yourself that he doesn't have a massive crush on you." You sister laughed.
She had bullied you all your life with your friendship with Steve. It was very special. You had never trusted anyone more in your life. You used to hang out constantly, he would come over to your place just to have some dinner and talk. You missed those times. You didn't see him as often as you used to.
"Bye, I'll talk to you later." You sighed before hugging her, not willing to give her bullying any attention.
You hugged your dad goodbye and left. You didn't have much time before the expo. You had go eat and get ready first. As you stepped outside you looked at Steve's apartment. After his mother died he stayed there. It was close to yours dad's apartment. For a moment you doubted. Knock on the door and eat with him? He didn't even say he was going to go. He was probably already at the movies.
You decided to go home instead. You didn't live far from your dad's place. A short 5 minute walk. You headed up the steps and walked into your apartment and dropped your bag on the floor behind the door.
You closed the door behind you a fixed up a quick dinner before deciding to get ready. You put on your favorite dress and did your makeup just the way you liked it. The stark expo was a special night, you wanted to look special to match it..
