Hide Behind The Mask

Alice sat on the hospital bed while the nurse wrapped her leg up with ease.The blood had stopped running out and after they cleaned it,the swelling went down quickly after.

"Your a very lucky lady that the dog didn't have a disease or bite you to deep..could've made this trip to the hospital more serious"the nurse proclaimed as she finished her leg and washed her hands."How'd it happen anyway?".

"Stray dog chased me..."Alice lied making John roll his eye's and smirk.

The nurse eyed Alice while pursing her lips into a thin line.

"Okay well the doctor said your fine to go you just need to take this pain pills and you'll be fine"she said handing Alice a white paper cup of pain pills and a water bottle before she left the room quickly.

Alice took the pills and drunk her water as John eyed her.

"So what now,do we tell your parents or are we still keeping this a secret?"John asked slowly.

Alice got off of the bed and put her jacket back on,"We can't tell anyone until we find out more....I'll think of something by tommorow".

John gave her a disappointing look as he helped her limp out the hospital and towards the car.

They would regroup once Alice thought of a new plan.

John dropped Alice off at her house as she noticed her parents rental car was in the drive way.

Alice got out the car and leaned into the open window,"Are you gonna keep the box until tommorow?".

"Yeah,I'll keep it safe....Call me if you need anything Ace"John said with sincerity.

Alice just nodded an okay as she walked into the house and heard movement in the kitchen.

She made her way towards the kitchen and saw her mom cleaning up.

"Hey mom"Alice said as she sat down on a stool.

Her mother didn't lift her head up from the counter but spoke back,"Hello dear,your home late...."

"Yeah,I was with John "Alice said as she eyed her mom closely.

"Thats fine,your dinner is in the microwave"Sarah said as she finished the counter and turned to face her daughter;something was bothering her.

She knew it wasnt about the break in because she cleaned everything perfectly so neither of her of her parents would know.

"Mom...whats the matter?"Alice asked as she looked at her disheveled face.

In the past year, Sarah's appearance has changed tremendously. Her once young, blemish free, tan face had lost it's tan and had gained wrinkles that made her look twice her age, while her eyes had changed from a ocean blue to a dull shade that had lost it spark. And the worst of all changes was her hair,it a year ago had volume and length that would make all the other house wifes jealous to the core but now it was thin and colorless to the point where her mother had given up on even styling it to her liking. She had let herself go;but no matter her state of being,her daughter and husband loved her endlessly.They knew she had took the kidnapoing the hardest.

"Nothing,I'm just tired hunny...I'll be fine"Sarah said as she began to walk away.

"Oh I almost forgot,your father and I have to go out of town tomorrow for a rally near Grandma's"she said over her shoulder to Alice.

"What's the rally for?"Alice asked.

"To speak for the children that are being taken...Maybe if we speak it will bring the case back to life"Sarah said with a dull tone.
