Another set of explanations

Start from the beginning

"Mom, I don't try to. It just happens," I said. "Plus, this time it wasn't even my fault. One moment I was-"

All the memories came flooding back to me, and I looked at my hands. They seemed perfectly normal, as if they hadn't been on fire almost 24 hours ago.

"Damn right it wasn't your fault," Dad said, putting the fire extinguisher on the table. "I had to use a tranquilizer dart to knock you out. The stuff that's supposed to put down hippos only knocked you out for a day."

"You. Shot. Me." I said. "With a tranquilizer dart. Is it me or is this whole thing completely crazy?"

"Not exactly," Mom said, folding her hands in her lap. She looked at Dad, seemly having a silent conversation.

Should we tell him? Mom's eyes said.

We can't. It's too soon. He won't understand. Dad's said right back.

Too soon? Carter, the boy was on fire. He phased through the door after teleporting out of the living room. You saw it yourself. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't tell him.

Dad glared back but relented. Mom gave me a somber look and started the explanation that defined many hard years to come.

"Peter, this will be very hard to explain. You cannot tell anyone what I am about to tell you now. If you do, I can't even comprehend how many people you will kill. But I have a feeling that you won't tell. Because it could, very likely, kill you in the process. You can choose to believe it or not, but I want you to know that what I am telling you is the completely truth. No lies or half-truths.

"We are not from this world."

There was an awkward silence before I shakily started laughing.

"Guys, April Fool's was five days ago. I know I've been unconscious for awhile, but I didn't go brain dead."

My dad shook his head with an authority I had never witnessed before. "No jokes, Peter. This is serious. It all started with a war amongst worlds. The planet we were from, Nibiru, was fighting for freedom against the world conquering race, the Galactians.

"They were despicable, horrible beings with a thirst for blood and rule. We fought hard for what seemed like millennium until we finally pushed through due to one single undercover spy. We had learned all there tactics and we were able to counter them poisoning their planet. However, when their remaining forces tried to attack Earth, but with their dying planet they hijacked Nibiru and propelled us light-years faster than our current speed. We were on a crash-course, and the only way to save billions of lives was to sacrifice our remaining population. Our elders decided that our culture and people were too precious and knowledgable to kill off, so they sent us."

"Us?" I asked. "What does that mean?"

"It means that the three of us were the only ones that made it out of the explosion. We are the last of the Nibirans."

I sat there as my parents waited for a reaction. Something. But there were too many things going on in my head to make sense of it.

I tried to say something, but all that came out was, "Where does my catching on fire and floating come into that?"

"That rock that you swallowed, it wasn't any ordinary, run-of-the-mill stone. It was an ancient Galactian weapon. When one of their kind was of age, about 10 in human years, the rock was implanted in the sternum, which gave them superhuman powers. The stone was native to their planet, Galactic. We found this stone in the remains of the Galactian Supreme Palace. Must have been an artifact or something. The elders decided that while Galactians had their flaws, their culture was too important to destroy."

"So that's what I just ate. An alien weapon. Super." I said.

"Hey, it's not some alien weapon. The Galactians called it Hyper, and it was worshipped as the giver of life. So don't go mocking it."

"Sorry," I said. Then another thought popped into my head.

"Will I die?"

"Your guess is as good as mine, champ," Dad said. "This has never happened before. I think your body is sort of playing around with the stone, trying to figure out what your power is."

"Power?" My body shot up, while my mood got insanely better. "You're saying that I'll get a superpower? Awesome!"

"Don't get your hopes up," Mom said. "We said you might get a power. Who knows what could happen. You could die. You could mutate into something horrible. Hell, you could pass it next time you go to the bathroom."

"But there is a possibility, right? Oh man! You saw what I did earlier! I'm going to be a superhero!"

"Hold on, Peter!" Mom practically yelled. "You cannot show anybody this power, if it even manifests."

"C'mon Mom! Think of it: Peter Cotton, world's first superhero!" I said, already thinking of how much my life would change.

"Peter, you can't. Until we know whether of not you have these so called powers, you can't act on it. Imagine the danger you would be in. Do you really want to die at the age of 13? We don't have all of the facts yet anyway. Galactians could still be out there. How do you think they'll react when they find out that there is still someone out there who has a Hyper. All of them were destroyed explosion. Besides, who would believe you?"

As much as I hated it, Dad was right. It would be cool to go and be a superhero, but like the great Spiderman says, that life isn't for the faint of heart. Still, I couldn't believe this was happening. All my life I always thought that I was meant for something great, but this was not what I had in mind.

"So, Peter, we'll continue to monitor you for any signs of the Hyper working. Until then, you'll continue to go to school as planned."

I frowned. "School?"
