Chapter Two- Aaron

"Hi sweetie," my mom greets me as I walk in the door, tossing my keys in the bowl we leave on the landing. "You're home late!"

I follow the sound of my mom's voice to the kitchen to see that she is surrounded by pots and pans with ingredients everywhere. "Whoa," I laugh. "What happened in here? Are we feeding an army?"

She swats at me with a dish towel. "That new family just moved in next door and I thought it would be nice to bring them over some food. A little welcome-to-the-neighborhood gift!"

"Someone new moves in and the first thing you think to give them is lasagna?"

"Oh, hush. Can you go let Zoe know that dinner's ready?"

"Sure thing, mom."

"Oh!" She exclaims, stopping me before I reach the stairs. "The family next door has a daughter about your age, I saw her leave for school this morning, she's very pretty," she grins at me.

"I don't need your help getting a date," I smirk at her. I look at her over my shoulder, one foot already on the stairs. "Plus there's a girl at school that I think I might be interested in."

I leave my mother with that tidbit of information as I bound up the stairs to get my sister.

That damn girl had been on my mind the entire way home. Not many girls shoot me down and if we're being honest...I had pegged Sage Thompson as another stuck-up, rich girl who would get caught up in my good looks. In short, I had thought she'd be easy.

The fact that she argues with me, and gives as good as she takes, makes me enjoy talking to her. A lot of girls would let me say just about anything to them without pushing back because they wouldn't want to ruin their chances. I like that she doesn't take any crap. I never back down from a challenge and I have a feeling Sage Thompson won't disappoint.

I knocked lightly on Zoe's door. "Aaron!" She shrieks before launching herself into my arms. I catch her easily and spin her around. "Where have you been?" She pouts.

"I stayed late after school, but I'm back now and it's time to chow down on some grub!"

She giggles as I set her back down on her feet. "No one talks like that," she says, shaking her head as she walks past me.

"Kids these days, no respect," I sigh as I follow her downstairs into the dining room where our mom has already set the table and is dishing up helpings of lasagna for us. "Mom," I gasp in mock outrage. "I thought that was for the neighbors."

"I made two lasagna's, smart a--"

"Mom!" Zoe cuts her off. "If we can't say it, you can't say it." She points her fork at our mom, making sure she gets the point across.

Our mom holds her hands up in defeat. "You are absolutely right, Zoe."

We finish our meal before my mom asks me to take the lasagna over to the new neighbors. I sigh but do as she asks so that she can focus on helping Zoe take her medication and get ready for bed.

I'm waltzing across the grass that separates our two houses when something through the neighbor's window catches my eye.

Sage Thompson.

A grin breaks across my face. No fucking way.

I hear a man's voice to calling to her from an open window. "Hey, Sage?"
