Entering a new life

The door to my new life opened. My grandfather stood in front of me, already smiling broadly at me.

"Juna, finally you are here!"

He took a step to the side to make room for me. I nodded and entered with my big red suitcase.

"Yes, I'm sorry if I'm a bit late, but there was a traffic jam in the city and we couldn't get through," I tried to explain the situation. Meanwhile, I slipped my shoes off and put them next to the small, brown, wooden shoe rack.

I looked up at the man I would be staying with from now on. I didn't know much about him, only that he had owned his own company a few years ago and was now quite wealthy and retired. And I had to say, you could tell by looking at him. Anyway, to me he looked like the kind of person you would imagine. A loving old man with a thin fringe of gray hair around his head, the rest was bald, and black glasses on his nose. However, he was still wearing a white shirt and black trousers, which came pretty close to a suit.

"Oh, that doesn't matter. I've got all the time in the world," he laughed cheerfully and closed the front door behind me. A slight smile crept onto my lips too.

"How is your father?" he then wanted to know, which made me tense up a little. I didn't like talking about him since he left."I... haven't had any contact with him for two years," I confessed. He just nodded in understanding and opened the door to the large living room.I entered slowly and looked around curiously.A very impressive living room with a light brown wooden floor, and beige armchairs, right in front of a window with a breathtaking view.I had been told that my grandpa had made a lot of money and that he lived in a modern skyscraper in the middle of Centium City, a city I had never heard of before, but this was beyond anything I had imagined."Make yourself comfortable. This is your home now, after all."I nodded with a smile and gently sat down on one of the soft armchairs, sinking straight into it. This was definitely a place where you could sleep.I looked back at my grandpa, who had just picked up my suitcase and disappeared behind another door. But I looked outside. We were quite high up and you could see half the city. At least that's what I thought, because I didn't know how big it was. Not yet, because I would definitely explore it.

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a few seconds.
This was where my new life would begin. At least until I could afford my own apartment. But despite everything that had happened to me, I was looking forward to it, because I needed this new beginning. And I needed it so badly!

"Juna, I'm going to go shopping for dinner."
My grandfather came out of the kitchen with a note in his hand, which he stuffed directly into his left trouser pocket, and came towards me. He held his right hand out to me and unclenched his fist.
"Your key. In case you want to explore the neighborhood. I'll probably be gone for an hour or two."
"Thank you," I smiled sincerely at him and took the key from his hand. He returned my smile and disappeared from the living room.
I heard the door of the apartment close and then it was quiet.
An oppressive silence spread.
I looked around the apartment again. It was huge. Too big for me if I had to live here alone.

At some point, I stood up and looked at everything up close. There were two white picture frames on a fireplace that served as a connecting wall between the kitchen and the living room. There was a photo of an older woman, which could have been my grandmother, and one of my mother. When I saw her smiling broadly in the photo, with her freckles and strawberry-blonde hair, I had to smile, but I also tried to suppress my sadness

"Aahhhhh!"

Suddenly there was a muffled scream that seemed to get closer and closer. Before I could make it out properly, it faded again and something flew past the window at incredible speed. For a second I wondered what it was, but then the silhouette of the object burned itself into my mind. My legs quickly carried me to the window, which I opened to enter the large balcony, right up to its edge. There I looked down.My heart began to pound as I realized what was happening. It wasn't an object, it was a person who was about to hit the street and end up as a pancake.
