  The meaning behind the song is not very clear, but fans thought the song was about former member Jesy Nelson. In 5 April, 2023, Jenna Collins said about that in an interview:
" Well, if fans think like that, then it is. We decided not to release it because it was a bit rough. I didn't want to start any drama so I just thought we should unrelease it. But later we wrote 'Cut You Off', still about someone else who you don't like. Technically, 'Thought We'll Be' and 'Cut You Off' are in same meaning, but with different point of view. "

Perrie Edwards also said about this song before Collins in 23th March, 2023:
" Jenna and Jade did a masterpiece, for sure. We just went to studio, recorded it for 'Between Us' and then Jenna came out to say it's so bad and tough, so we didn't release it. But I think it was worth to it. "
