"Beaut,
Every so often, life
Unfailingly, you."
Dahyun stared at the yellow note, paper creased in the middle. Wonwoo had given it to her seconds before she boarded the bus home.
She could clearly understand what it meant, or at least she assumed she figured it out correctly, but here she was wondering what Wonwoo's motive could be with the said boy out of sight and her smartwatch dinging from a new notification.
"Wonwoo sent a new message: Take care on the way home. :)"
It was new, the note, but the quiet afternoons of Wonwoo sending her home wasn't. They usually met at the back of the mall near her school whenever their schedules matched.
Once or twice a month, between the hours of 4 and 6 PM, Wonwoo would chat.
"I'm nearby."
After a year and seven months of talking, their conversations diminished to mere hi's and hello's, to 'take care', and 'I just got home'. Wonwoo would repeatedly be the one to initiate conversations with random photos of himself, of the things he's keen into buying, and videos of games he's currently playing.
"I just got home." Dahyun's screen awoke thanks to another one of his messages.
"Me, too." She typed, and Wonwoo was quick to react to it with a heart.
This would be the time that Dahyun puts down her phone and returns her focus to whatever she was doing, but a message popped up right after the other until her screen shifted to his caller ID.
Again, this was new.
Dahyun was already accustomed to the series of voicemails he would send whenever he felt lazy to type it all out, but a call in this household?
She had to hold her breath and look both ways despite having an entire room to herself because this isn't Wonwoo, but the same guy who has been leaving her on read seemed to surprise her with something out of character for the past six months.
"Hello?" She hesitantly brought her phone to her ear.
"I thought you weren't going to pick up." Wonwoo joked with a hearty laugh.
She wasn't supposed to. It took her a good minute to press 'accept', but Dahyun had already presumed that this was another one of his tricks.
"I'm going to assemble the Lego you bought for me." She could hear the subtle rustling of the paper bag it came in.
"That's good." Dahyun responded timidly. "Why did you call?"
"Ah," Wonwoo paused and Dahyun was left standing in the middle of her bedroom, still in her undone uniform.
"I just wanted to." She heard his bed creak, followed by a soft sigh. He must have sat down. "Are you busy? You weren't responding."
"I'm not." She shrugged off her unbuttoned blouse. "So, why did you call?" Her uneasiness made her question him again.
It's not every day that she has someone call her at home, and it's not every day that he of all people would want to catch her attention.
"Just because. Aren't you going to ask me the meaning of the poem?"
"No," Dahyun bent down to retrieve the note from her fallen skirt. She already knew. "Wouldn't it be weird to ask?"
Not really, but Dahyun had written him a note once and Wonwoo brought it up to her in confusion. Instead of explaining, she decided to return the question to him, asking what he thought she meant to which he replied: "Wouldn't it be weird to ask?".
