Chapter 1 Home

I sat on my bedroom floor, knees tight across my chest. There was fighting and dishes being thrown in the air. I tried humming the song my aunt would sing, that was, before she rammed her car into a tree. I heard painful screams of Mama, Papa had gone to kiss other girls and Mama had found out. I squeezed my head into my knees. The front door slammed shut. He was leaving. The light flickered off as Mama screamed his name "MATHEW!". My eyes teared up, we weren't gonna have any light or heat tonight. He turned it off. My stomach, howling, I haven't eaten in days. I leaned my head against the wall and sang the song a bit louder. Mama came bursting into my room. I jumped and screamed, not expecting her to make her position known.

"Stop singing that song! She's dead!" Mama screeched.

I wiped my tears and tried to lay down to sleep, if you didn't do what she asked and she'd add to your collection of knife scars. I did that thing again. That feeling when I shut off my emotions. The peace, the euphoric feeling. I sat there with my eyes wide, wondering if Pa would come back this time or if he was gone forever. I thought a lot, I tried to keep quiet. sometimes though my cursed nature breaks free of its restraints and it keeps talking. Mama hates talking, especially when it's about our family or Aunt Dede.

I heard Mama crying and smashing glass. I'd jump every time there was a drop. When all had stopped I finally could sleep, and that's just what I did.

As I rose from my bed, I started hearing more glass breaking. I wandered to Mama's room, unaware this would be one of the biggest mistakes of my life.

I creaked open the door, to only see Mama smashing a picture of her and Pa. They looked so happy, where did it go wrong?

"Oakley, leave my room." She said, her voice shattered.

"Mama, what's wrong?" I asked, even though I could have guessed.

She laughed quietly, but it wasn't happiness or joy. It sounded more like pain.

"Oak tree, I don't need your disobedients right now." She opened her drawer.

"Mama, I'm scared. Pa turned out the lights and I can't see-"

She slashed a knife across my face.

"Get out!" she screamed.

I picked up the picture she had thrashed and just as I was ready on my way out, I heard the door lock. She had the knife in her hand and had completely lost every bit of human in her. It was like I was staring into the eyes of a lost and broken soul.

"Mama?"

She grabbed me as I screamed and kicked. She pinned me on the floor and drew her bladed close to my face. She scraped my eye out of its socket. I screamed in pain and kicked and punched, but her strength was of a bear. She took the eye like it was a trophy. Crying in pain I scrambled to my room. Mama had followed me. She had a string to the eye and she dangled it with a small candle flashing on it. She had a small grin full of evil and a little bit of pain. She left and I heard the door lock. Screaming and crying I sat in the middle of my room on my bed made out of a few blankets.

I put my hand over my ears and then my eye. My breathing was heavy, I couldn't think straight, all there was was throbbing pain in my eye socket.

A few minutes had passed and Mama unlocked the door. She walked in and towards me. I yelled at her and moved back with my hand over my eye. She ran towards me and picked me up. I pushed against her trying to free myself but she held strong. She sat me down on a counter with small tears in her eyes. She didn't know what to say. She grabbed a big padded bandage and placed it over my eye. I screamed, not trusting her. She held me down as she fixed it in the back. She held my head close to her chest with tears. She didn't want to say anything, knowing I'd yell and scream. I shoved away from her and jumped down. I wanted to forgive her, but it was too hard given everything she had done. I went into my room and slammed the door.
