3 : The Engagement

Start from the beginning

"That's wonderful. Ishika's wedding might be held next month to expedite things. As an event designer, would you mind planning it?" Uncle asked, excitement evident in his voice. My eyes widened with excitement, but then reality hit, and I pouted.

"But uncle, we'll need to offer this project to the head, and I'm not sure if they'll approve, especially since it involves traveling to another city," I explained sadly.

"I'll take care of it. If you want, you should go for it," my brother reassured, making me grin. He's always there for me. I hugged Ishika, and we squealed with excitement together.

"Now, the designer's decorating decisions won't pressure me, and I can have my wedding just the way I want it," Ishika exclaimed in excitement.

"Aur nhi toh kya, mai hu na idhar, tum chinta mat lena," I assured her.
[Don't worry, I'm here. You don't need to stress.]

I walked into the mansion, glancing at my mother and Shravani, my younger sister sitting on the couch. Their gazes were fixed at some magazine while they giggled.

My mother finally notices me, "Aagaya mera jigar ka tukda,"
[Here comes the apple of my eye.]

"Ji, maa." I murmured, immediately bending down to touch her feet and receive blessings.

"Jeeta reh." She responded.
[Live long.]

"Lo, aagaya Maa ka raaj-dulara!" Shravani exclaimed while rolling her eyes. I took a seat and that's when my grandmother entered the living room.
[Look, here comes Maa's darling.]

"Vaani jao aur apne bhaiya ke liye paani leke aao." Dadi asked Shravani to which she nodded obediently.
[Vaani, go and bring some water for your brother]

"So, how was the day?" My mother asks while taking a seat beside me.

"Pretty fine and the conference went smoothly."

"Yuvraj beta." my dadi called.

"Haan, dadi?"
[Dadi = grandmother.]

"Yuvraj, ab tum bade ho rahe ho. Tumhe ab shaadi kar leni chahiye," she said with concern.
[Yuvraj, you're getting older now. It's time for you to settle down,]

I rolled my eyes internally. "Dadi, please. I'm only 28. Mere paas bahut samay hai."
[I have plenty of time.]

My sister entered, handing me a glass of water, "Haan bhaiya, ab apne liye bhi koi rani le aao, Avinash bhaiya toh kal hi sagaai karlenge."
[Yes, brother, now bring a queen for yourself too, Avinash is getting engaged tomorrow.]

She says reminding me of Avinash, my younger brother who's getting engaged tomorrow.

I glared at her, "Main jaanta hoon. Lekin abhi toh mujhe apni career par dhyaan dena hai. Shaadi baad mein bhi ho sakti hai."
[I know. But I have my career to focus on right now. Marriage can wait.]
