Returning back here was never in my to-do list.

You can have an attachment with people, you can love them and care for them and yet want to maintain a distance, a healthy gap that ensures the continuity of a good bond.

I stand with my husband, in front of my home, one that I had left behind me. This home holds so many memories, some good and some bad. I have grown up here, and I have seen my siblings being born here. I have seen failures and successes within these four walls.

I have felt caged and burdened and spent days and nights crying due to the pressure. But, I have also shared the loudest laughs with my family. How can a place be your calm and your chaos, at the same time?

"Shall we?" Kabir asks as I refocus my attention on him. He is holding our suitcase as we stand in the garden before the house.

This house is no less than a palace, it's a property that signifies our heritage. It's located on the outskirts of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. It's a huge property, spanning over acres of land. It is painted with a reddish-brown hue, it's designed to depict the structure of homes in ancient times.

The garden is luscious and green, there are white lawn chairs and tables placed right in the centre. My dad had instilled swings and slides as well, all of us loved having this set-up. We used to be out here, playing and enjoying until very late at night.

When we had entered, the guards stationed outside had first stopped us seeing the unknown vehicle but the moment they saw me, their facial expressions turned into surprise and then into happiness.

Noticing their rejoiced expressions, I felt a waver within me. When I had left, I wasn't only leaving my family back but also all of these people, who had seen me grow and were there throughout my childhood to my teenage and adulthood.

Kabir clasps my hand, as we walk towards the entrance. It's a huge arched gate, one that leads us straight to an area inside our home, it's an open space. It is the centre of the house, one that acts as a hallway to all the other rooms and the kitchen space.

He knocks at the door while I stand there frozen. Everything flashes before my eyes, I keep remembering the day I had stepped out of this very same threshold.
