it was sometime in late summer, Michael wasn't sure, when Luke knocked on his bedroom door explaining how his mum had let him in.

Michael was confused, because Luke never voluntarily came over to his house. unless there was something he needed.

"what's up?" Michael asked when Luke took a seat on the couch in front of Michael's window, his favourite seat in the room because he liked the way the sky turned pink after 7pm.

"you know, you're my favourite, right?" Luke asked, not even bothering to turn and face Michael.

"um, am I?"

Luke nodded, "yeah. you mean a lot to me," he took a peek at Michael, a smirk playing on his face. "as a friend, of course."

Michael's pale cheeks turned an embarrassing reddish hue, he fumbled around with his guitar before deciding it was best to just put it down before he broke it or something.

"I--um, yeah," he coughed, finding it hard to catch the right words. Luke noticed this, loving how Michael squirmed under his gaze. "just--yeah."

Luke nodded, licking his lips before taking one last glance out the window then sitting up to take a seat in front of Michael, bringing his legs up to his chest.

Michael paled, hating how it made him feel but loving how close Luke was to him.

"you have pretty eyes, Mikey." Luke smiled sweetly, tilting his head to the side, keeping his stare locked with Michaels. "I bet all the girls love it, right?"

Michael laughed, loudly, probably too loud but he didn't have it in him to care.

"yeah, totally." he laughed, throwing his head back in amusement.

Luke smiled, his soft hands reaching out to massage the skin of Michael's knee.

never having felt anyone elses skin on his, Michael felt as if he was going to pass out any second. it felt undeniably good.

"what's so funny?" Luke asked, retracting his hand and flicking through his playlist to find a song both Michael and he liked.

he finally settled on Silhouettes by Of Monsters and Men. remembering precisely how Michael ranted on and on about how much he loved this song back when they were younger.

"girls don't like me, Luke." Michael frowned, wanting to make Luke leave but Luke just--Luke knew him so well, he knew every little thing about Michael but Michael knew nothing about Luke. Luke knew that this topic was making Michael slightly uncomfortable but he wanted to test the boundaries and push Michael just that little bit more.

"and why not?" Luke asked, mindlessly humming along to the tune of the song. "handsome boy like yourself, why wouldn't you get the ladies?"

Michael shrugged, his feet turning fizzy due to the lack of blood that was running through them from how he was sitting.

"not sure. they seem to like you a lot more than me."

Luke smiled, once again his hand was placed on Michael's knee and Michael felt like this was right. this was home. Luke was his home.

"why would anyone like me? I mean, I've never been kissed, I'm almost eighteen, Luke, and I have never been kissed. I'm just some dumb kid who likes bands and dyes their hair way too much to still have hair." Michael said, feeling a wave of relief hit him when the words tumbled out.

he had never told anyone that.

"never been kissed?" Luke asked, his eyebrows shooting up.

blushing profusely, Michael nodded, biting down harshly on his lip until Luke swatted at him.

"don't bite your lips, they'll bleed, nobody will kiss you then."

"okay." Michael said, head bowing in shame.

nobody would ever want to kiss him, biting his lip or not.

"and I happen to love your hair at the moment, the colour really goes with your skin." Luke said, grinning at the how he could make Michael's cheeks heat up at any compliment. "what if I kissed you?"

at this, Michael's head shot up, his eyes winding and for the hundreth time that day, his cheeks igniting a flaming shade of red.

"you? k-kissing me?"

"well, why not?"

Michael gulped, his head spinning.

"I--why?"

Luke laughed, as if what he was about to say was the most obvious thing in the world. as if everyone but Michael himself knew.

"for practice, obviously."

Michael nodded, seeming to somewhat agree.

"for practice." he mumbled, not to anyone in particular, perhaps trying to convince himself. "okay--okay, sure."

Luke smiled, shuffling in closer to Michael, his hands taking the older boys.

"you'll always be my favourite, Mikey, just don't tell Ash or Cal." Luke whispered, his nose brushing over Michael's rosey cheeks.

"promise."

"you ready?" Luke whispered, as if a million people were watching them at that moment.

"ready." and then Luke was kissing him.

it felt weird. it obviously felt weird at first. he was kissing his best friend. for practice. he wanted to pull back but when Luke's hands dropped his and his long arms went to put Michael's hands on his waist, Michael thought, fukc it.

so he let Luke's arms snake around his neck and he let Luke kiss him deeper.

because it felt like home.

Luke felt like home.
