Mama prayed to Allah for a boy
Allah gave my mother a girl
A girl with a temper of fire
A girl with skin like a cactus
Born with bruised knuckles and a tongue sharper than a spear
Mama prayed to Allah for a boy
Allah gave my mother a girl
A girl who ran through the woods and climbed every tree
Ripping her clothes in the process
She fought with imaginary beasts
Who loved the wind which ruffled her hair and made her skirts billow
Who danced around the boundaries of chalk everyone drew around her
Mama prayed to Allah for a son
Knowing a daughter of her kin would face
many hardships from the opinions of our culture.
