A letter?

She stood there, staring blankly at the crisp piece of parchment. Star swiftly tore open the letter, and inside she saw a maroon colored piece of paper nestled inside. She had just finished skimming through the note as Marco rushed down the stairs to be by her side.

"What is it? Are you alright? Is everything okay?" He couldn't stop asking questions regarding the safety of his friend, him being the safe kid and all, but Star, wishing for him to not worry so much, answered him quickly.

"Well... okay, so apparently there's this dance over in another dimension and I've been invited to be there. It's tonight, too."

"What's the problem, then?" Marco was bothered by Star's unhappiness, and wanted to find out how to fix it.

"My ex boyfriend, Tom, wants me to be his date to the dance, but I just can't! I told him it's over, but does he listen? He even had the nerve to say that if I don't come he'll come and take over the world and all that "terrible" stuff,". She sighed. "Typical Tom."

Marco stared at her, his mouth hanging open.

"He-he's gonna take over the world?" His voice quivered.

"Uh, yeah, Marco. Were you even listening?" She rolled her eyes.

Marco gulped, fear and worry in his eyes.

"Star, having Tom taking over the world could mean the end of it," He was gripping her by the shoulders now. "Innocent people and animals will die, cities will fall apart, everything will be gone!-"

"Haha, Marco, it's oooookay. I'll go. It's not worth destroying the world for."

He hugged her tightly, thanking her over and over again, but Star pushed back a little, their faces now inches away from each other.
"Under one condition. I have to go by myself. "

The words sunk deep in his mind, and immediately he began to worry.

"W-what?! Star, I can't let you go by yourself! It's not safe! What's going to happen if you get hurt?"

"What happens if you get hurt?" Their eyes lingered on each other's for a brief moment. "Marco, I can't risk your safety for mine. Besides, it's my mess, and I'm the one who should have to deal with it."

"But Star-"

"It's your date with Jackie that you should be worrying about, not me. While you're, uh, with her tonight, I'll be with Tom at the demon prom. Okay?"

"Oh...uh... alright," he muttered, still slightly uneasy. "What time is it anyway?"

"6:05. I have about two hours before I should go. Text Jackie to see if she's available at eight."

Marco quickly texted her.

Does eight sound good?

Yeah. Let's meet over at Sprinkles ice cream parlor.

Okay.

"So?" questioned Star. Marco gave a thumbs up in response. "Well then, I'm going to go upstairs and get ready."

"I think I'll start preparing, too." The two followed each other up the stairs, both of them going in their own rooms to get ready.
