Holy cow! I did it! I did it!

I squeal and shove my glasses up my nose before taking off down the stairs to the kitchen to find Mom.

"Mom! I did it!" I scream as I slide inside the kitchen, my fuzzy pink socks causing me to glide across the room.

"Shh! Honey, Steve is sleep." My Mom whispers harshly, as she stirs something in a big pot.

It takes all of my will not to roll my eyes.

"Mom, look!" I shout again, not giving a flip flop if Steve was or,wasn't sleep.

Mom huffs then, takes the paper from me and scans over it.

Her grip tightens on the paper as she reads on, tears fill her eyes.

"Oh, honey....that's...that's wonderful." Mom keeps staring at the paper.

"I know! I can't wait to go! I should call Ray now! Ahhh!" I wiggle my entire body as I dance my way toward the house phone on the wall.

"Whoa, whoa! Honey, you can't go." Mom finally looks up at me, her eyes wide.

"What?! Why?!" I cry out, smacking my palm down on to the counter.

"Sweetie, I can't....Ray can't...we can't afford this." She sets the letter down on the counter and goes back to stirring.

"I got a scholarship! You won't have go pay for anything but a plane ticket!" I shout, again smacking my palm against the counter.

"Ana...no. You can't go! And that's final!" Mom shouts back, slamming down the lid on to the pot.

"What the hell are you guys in here fussing about?!" Steve comes stomping into the kitchen, a beer can in one hand and his belt in the other.

My Mom's breath starts to come quicker and she wraps her arms around herself.

"We didn't mean to wake you, baby." She says softly, taking a step back as he took a step forward.

I stood motionless, watching an everday scene unfold.

Now, he's never hit my mother but, he's come close. He's never hit me either. He knows my Dad,( former stepdad) Ray,would have his tail on a silver platter if he did.

"What were you two arguing about?" He hisses as he snatches the refrigerator door open and picks up another beer.

"Anastasia wants to go to school, in Seattle." My Mom whispers, her head bowed as she stirs the food again.

"So let her go. One less fucking mouth to feed. There. End of discussion." He leaves the kitchen and I see it then in my Mom's eyes, why she doesn't want me to leave.

She doesn't want to be left alone, with him.

As much as I wanted to stay, I couldn't. I needed to escape. I just hope Mom will do the same.

______________

Ray set down my two suitcases on the twin sized bed in his spare bedroom that was now mine.

"Good to have you here, Ana. I'll go put on some tea and order us some Chinese." He kissed my forehead and shuffled out the room, closing the door behind him.
