As you stumbled into consciousness, a rough hand yanked you by the hair, pulling you up to a sitting position on the bed. Squinting through the early morning light, you could just make out the form of your father standing over you. He slapped you hard across the face, causing your head to snap back against the headboard.
"Can't even wake up for f*cking school?" he growled, shoving you back into the bed.
"I wish you'd never wake up. Unfortunately, you are awake so you better have your uniform on by the time I get back in here."
The door slammed shut behind him, leaving you alone in the silence of the bedroom. You sat there, your mind numbed. The words he'd spoken were just noise, as meaningless as the pain that still lingered in your body.
Mustering up the strength to get out of bed, you sneaked to the bathroom and freshened up before putting on your scratchy school uniform. Especially in the summer heat makes the blazer feel like a straight jacket, trapping you in a never-ending cycle of sweat and exhaustion. At least it was winter.
Picking up your bag, you slid open the window and climbed out. You've learned that going out the front door could put you at risk of another beating. In the safe confines of the shadows, you paused to check yourself in your (stolen) makeup mirror. The bruises were covered by a layer of makeup, but the pain was still raw and intense.
