CHAPTER 23 : Subhadra

Start from the beginning

                             .  .  .

Furthermore, Subhadra and I had formed such a strong bond; she truly was the best friend I could have asked for. Every time I stepped into her room, it was like being enveloped in the sweet scent of roses. I gently pushed open the grand golden gate to enter her spacious room, which offered a breathtaking view of a hill that separated Mathura and Vrindavan. Upon entering, my eyes were greeted by a sight of countless freshly sewn lenghans and dupattas, while Subhadra sat by the window, tears streaming down her face.

"Subhadra--" i called out her name, as i ran towards her.

"Sakhi--" As she woke up, tears streaming down her face, she approached me and embraced me tightly. The sunlight seeped through the small openings in the curtains, causing me to close my eyes with one hand while gently stroking her with the other.

"What happened--are you alright ?" I asked, as my heart rate started to increase, her eyes were already dry from crying, I felt sorry when I saw her in such a miserable condition. Her lipstick had faded away, her necklace was hanging upside down, and her hair was completely disheveled. When she stood in front of me, I could catch a whiff of her damp hair and the scent of roses.

"Nihira––m-my bracelet––"  She cried, struggling to catch her breath. All of a sudden, she began to hiccup and a tiny bubble popped out of her nose. I couldn't help but smile as she defiantly plopped back down in her seat, crossing her arms.

"What bracelet subhadre––" i said coming in front of her.

"The bracelet, bhrata Balrama gave to me, is lost––"

"Ah–Oh––for real––? I wispered.

"Yes, will you find it for me-- nihira." She said weeding.

"Stay right here, and I'll help you to find it." I handed her a glass of water and invited her to take a seat once more. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation as I made my way to the large wardrobe she owned. Not only were her clothes scattered all over the room, but a sandalwood box overflowed with even more vibrant and exciting outfits of hers.

As I searched through the sandalwood box, I discovered a vibrant collection of Subhadra's purple dupattas and lehngas, which happened to be her favorite color. When I caught sight of her hurrying towards me, I couldn't help but give her a peaceful smile. However, she abruptly woke up from her cozy sofa, leaving me puzzled. I remained standing there, perplexed, as I resumed my search for her bracelet.

I unexpectedly noticed what seemed like a painting peeking out from under her saree. It was a peculiar sensation, and when I picked up the painting, I realized it was of someone familiar. A strange emotion washed over me as I stood there puzzled. Just as I was about to say something, Subhadra rushed in from the window and grabbed the painting from my hands.

It was arjun's painting.

"No, no... you are not supposed to see this." She said hiding it behind herself.

I couldn't help but chuckle as I attempted to pry it from her hands. She seemed so nervous, a look of fear crossing her pale face as I uncovered her long-held secret.

"So, subhadre is it Arjun then––"  I asked, gently nudging her with my elbow, her cheeks were bright red and she couldn't even look me in the eye.

"It's nothing like that nihira, stop assuming things––" she let out.

"I'm not assuming anything, but why are you so nervous all of a sudden?"  I inquired with a sarcastic tone, she strolled ahead of me returning to her usual spot of hanging out, by the window, clutching the portrait of Arjun near her heart and  I trailed behind her.

"How do you even know him––?" I questioned out of curiosity.

However, Subhadra was completely immersed in a sea of shyness. Her cheeks had already turned a deep shade of crimson, and her eyes were cast downwards in her bashfulness. Despite this, I couldn't help but smile throughout our conversation. I wondered if she had developed feelings for Bhrata Arjun. I had a multitude of questions swirling in my mind, eager to be asked. Unfortunately, she wouldn't even glance in my direction.

"Subhadra, what is it––you know you can trust me, with life." I assured her and gently directed her gaze towards her. The wind blew in through the window, signaling the approach of evening. The sunlight danced through her flowing curls, enveloping her in its warm glow. Her eyes sparkled like ice, reflecting the sun's rays, enhancing her already enchanting appearance.

"I've heard a lot about Arjun, from Bhrata Krishna, although I've never seen him––" before she could compelete in broke in, acting all dramatic.

"You've never met him––?" I questioned with confusion.

"No, but I've this painting which i took from the artist giving him a gold ring in return." She said, exited.

"Oh my God, subhadre, you never told me––" I roused up from my seat, acting all dramatic.

"I was so curiously waiting for this moment, nihira. You've seen him, tell me how is he ?" She questioned grabbing my hand with curiosity and desires.

"Ahem, so..." I replied with a profound gap, that clearly irritated her to the core, she made an exhausted face and urged me to speak up fast about his beloved Arjun.

"He's very funny." I said

"And––"

"Very tall and handsome, if that's the word."

"oH, and––"

"He's very kind and generous."

"I knew it, and––"

"He's good at studies"

"And––"

"Is he the best acher––?" She asked.

"Ah, No––"

"What, then who is it––?"

"Ashwattama."
