Alexis Margs was a girl, 14, starting high school "alone" longing to find her place in the crowd. sixth grade brought bullying, seventh grade brought sadness, and eighth grade brought stress. Every year of her middle school career brought something new. Not necessarily good, but something.
Alexis had been insecure for a while, she remembered being ten and staring at herself in the mirror at dance class. She was too pale, too tall, and too thin. She thought this was the way it was supposed to be, that she was supposed to feel this way about herself.
Alexis stood at 5'9, although height is a good thing to many people, to Alexis, it made her stand out. Her middle school friend group from seventh to eighth grade had always been shorter than her and she often envied their heights. Alexis's body was long and lanky, her frizzy, wavy brunette hair fell 8 inches below her shoulders. There were many things she did not like about her appearance, her hair being one of them. Alexis had pointy ears, one of them stuck farther out than the other, partly because of her medical condition that she had when she was born. "The worst case of torticolis they had ever seen" according to the stories her parents had told her. Ever since the seventh grade, her peers made fun of how her one ear stuck out. It made her look like an "elf" as the comments on her social media had said. Because of this she never wore her hair up, leaving it down to cover her pointy ears. Because she always had to wear her hair down, she straightened it every day.
Although her birth name was Alexis, nobody called her that. Everyone, well almost everyone called her Lexi. She thought Alexis never suited her, so for now it was Lexi.
