Vesper

Okay, you'd think after everything I've gone through, I'd catch a break for at least a couple years, right?

Sorry, you probably don't know who I am. Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Vesper Cary Nocte, I'm sixteen years old, and I'm African-American. I have dark blue hair braided in jade braids with silver charms and beads in my hair, like stars in the night sky, as my father used to say. I have heterochromia, my left eye is a very, very dark brown that appears black, and my right eye is a very dark blue. Right now, I'm wearing a black cropped top with long, flared sleeves and patterns of stars, paired with a matching long, black, layered skirt.

But my outfit isn't important right now. What's important is the fact that not even a full three months ago, my dad died, then my best friend died three weeks later, and then my insane ex-boyfriend tried to kidnap me. I know that sounds absolutely insane and unreal, but trust me, it happened. And after all that, I'm here. After everything I've been through, I'm stuck in...whatever this place is.

I stop running for a moment so I can actually look at my surroundings. I'm unsure of how long I've been running, but I'm out of breath, and I haven't really gotten everywhere. Everything was winding and changing as I went, but I didn't feel like I was any closer to escaping. The yellow, vintage looking walls were still completely random, illogical, and displaced. The yellowish carpet was still oddly damp and smelled like mildew. The luminescent lights above me were still annoyingly humming and buzzing and occasionally flickering on and off. This entire place was an absolute fucking nightmare as an Autistic person with sensory issues. I can't tell if I'm going to have a meltdown or a panic attack.

I pick up my pace again, but I don't run this time. Instead, I realize it would be more logical to walk so I can observe my surroundings. Plus, nothing seems to be chasing me at the moment, I should save my energy for anytime I may potentially be in danger.

Nothing seems to be changing, besides the usual change of walls and doors randomly, except this time I notice security cameras along the walls, as well as plugs and outlets. I didn't see those before. That means this place has electricity, which is a good sign.

I don't even know how I got here. I literally just got up from my desk chair and then I fell through my fucking floor and ended up here somehow. I was terrified out of my mind. I was convinced that somehow someone must've spiked the coffee I had earlier because none of this was possible. But I had a feeling I wasn't hallucinating or imagining this...this felt too real. Real, raw terror coursed through my veins. I wanted to vomit on the floor, but I managed to keep it down. I know that if I stop, if I let myself be weak now, I won't be able to stop, and then I might be in even more danger than I am now.

Suddenly, I pause. I've found myself in front of a vent. It's completely out of place, it's wide open in the middle of a wall, and I can't see where it goes. But it's wide enough for me to fit in, and this is the biggest change I've seen so far. I figure it must mean something, so I manage to climb into the vent. I crawl through the slightly cramped vent. It isn't that long, it only takes me about three minutes to reach the other side of the vent.

I crawl out of the vent and I land on the same damp carpet, but there's something a little different. Instead of being in an open space, I appear to be in a hallway. The walls are the same color and pattern, though.

I take a moment to look around, and I immediately find a small, plastic basket filled with various supplies just sitting on the ground. I get on one knee and I begin to look through the basket. I found a small, yellowish bottle that says "ALL NATURAL ALMOND WATER" and "ORIGINAL- with VANILLA and ROSE". I'd never seen this brand before nor had I ever heard of almond water, but it's a source of hydration, so I'll take it. I also found a couple protein bars and a...walkie talkie. That could be incredibly useful, so I put it in my pocket.

I also found a small pamphlet looking thing. It's small, black, and it has the texture of those store bought birthday cards. The front of it has M.E.G in big white letters. I open it up and I start reading the contents. The pamphlet says;

Hello, wanderer!
Chances are, you're reading this and you have no clue where you are or what's going on. Don't worry, we're here to help!
You are in what we have called "the backrooms". It's a dimension between dimensions, a glitch in the fabric of time and reality.
Now, the bad news is that we don't really know how to get back to the frontrooms, AKA Earth. We have some ideas of how one may leave, but all of them are way too dangerous, and we have no possible way of knowing for sure.
However, you will be excited to hear that wherever you are now, a group of our lovely, extremely well trained soldiers are coming for you right now, and they'll show you around, tell you everything you need to know, and then take you to one of our many colonies.
Hopefully by now you've found the walkie talkie we place in all of our supply packages. You can use that to radio someone, it should pick up on whoever is closest to you, and you may use that to communicate with the soldiers until they reach to if doing so would make you feel safer.
That's all. Stay where you're at.
-M.E.G

I feel so confused. What is M.E.G? What the hell do they mean "colonies"? Do they have fully working societies here, in this seemingly endless hell of yellow walls and mildewy carpets? I'm so incredibly confused, and scared. I don't know who these people are or if I should trust them, but I don't really have a choice other than to stay put. I could keep walking, but where would I go? I have a feeling I could keep walking forever and never get anywhere without help.

So, I stay put. I open a bottle of almond water, realizing that my throat is dry and I haven't had any water or anything for hours by now. I start sipping on the water and at the same time, I turn on the walkie talkie. I start messing with the buttons and dials until finally, I pick up on something...
