Sarah changed. Now she wants to be a better person. She just wants to leave the past behind and her new priorities are doesn't get in problems, work hard and try to be nice. But when she tries to ge...
"Probably not," she said interested in the girl's story. "You'll just find old books at second-hand bookstores. There are many of them downtown."
The girl listened to her carefully and turned away from the clumsy attendant when she returned.
"We don't have the collection of stories anymore, but I can send a purchase order it is coming next week."
The girl looked at Sarah and poked fun at the attendant by rolling her eyes, making an inside joke between her and Sarah. Sarah withheld a smile and so as the girl.
I liked the girl, she thought.
Sarah didn't have female friends, but she never blamed anyone for that. Her aggressive temperament didn't give any space for another woman around her. Her friendships always ended the worst way possible, so that she didn't try to be friends with someone from the opposite sex anymore. There was a long time she didn't feel empathy for anyone from the same sex, but this girl looked easy to handle. Maybe I could help her.
"I know it feels weird, but I've got some books that must be from the '80s," she said, getting up from the couch. "I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but maybe I can help you. Would you like to have a look?"
The nice girl looked at her, and it felt that she was thinking about it. The books from Sarah's childhood were methodically preserved in her collection. They played an essential role in the relationship with her father, and she would never be able to give away something so meaningful.
"Wow, that sounds amazing," she said. "Would you do me that favor? How can we do that? Would rather send me by e-mail? " she asked so fast that she took a breath when finished speaking.
Sarah smiled. She thought how funny was her enthusiasm. She seems nice, she noticed.
"I live in a building nearby. How about come with me and check it out yourself? If you get interested, you can use my computer to scan."
Sarah didn't know what was wrong with her to be so lonely. Now, she's making her first good action of the year. The seemed not to believe it, her eyes were happy.
It isn't that bad making a good action. You see it, Sarah? She thought ironically.
"Yes! Wow, thank you very much. I was almost hopeless to solve this today. It would take me forever if I purchased it on the internet and I don't have much time." She smiles, relieved.
Sarah was so curious to know what was so important about those books, but she held her tongue in her mouth.
"It's nothing," she tried to be nice. "So, let's go?"
"Let's," she answered, looking happy.
Sarah walked toward the bookstore entrance and watched the girl follow her.
"By the way, my name is Samanta."
"Hi, Samanta. My name is Sarah."
That was the beginning of the end.
